You need all the correct tools so if your going to attempt it, which I dont recomend, make sure you get all the gear pulling tools and other specialty tools you might need.

shindley overhauls trannies for 300$ and then whatever for parts. depending on how bad your tranny is depends on how much $$ you'll be spending, trust me, i know - he told me this 2 days ago! my suggestion, go with shindley, he'll get the job done and i'm sure you'll be satisfied.

Yep, he recently upped his prices a bit to $300 + parts. He can also do the double synchro 2nd gear.

I got a price from him a week ago. It was like 1300.00 to rebuild all stock but the double synchro 2nd gear. 8 months ago he told me 600.00 for the same work. Shep is 900.00 and thats where Im sending mine.

With those prices you can't beat Shep. I thought Shindley was cheaper?

Before you send your tranny off(if you do), ask the place before hand to give you a precise time estimate on when you will have your tranny back. What i have found in the past is that some people who race and do these services as a business as well, sometimes their own personal stuff/projects will be priority over yours and that's why the delay is so long. It happened to me once before with a place. I won't say everyone does it but it happens.

This is what I have none of, so I didnt think it would've been a good idea to do it myself.
What's this Double 2nd gear Synchro and what's it suppose to do? Oh, man...I dont even know how bad my tranny is messed up. I'll have to wait to send it to him, gotta save up some money just incase more stuff is broken then what I thought.

Does anybody have a detailed (or even a rough) list of tools you actually need beyond the standard assortment of sockets, wrenches, screw drivers, etc? The manual has a list but it's huge and a lot of the time tasks can be done using alternative means.

The tools list (and the unkown cost and availability of the tools) is the only thing stopping me from ripping into one of mine. I have at least two cars that need work soon and who knows how many in the future so I figure it may be worth learning.

You will need access to a hydraulic press in order to get the bearings off. Also you will need some sort of claws to get under the bearing while pushing down on the shaft with the press. So basically you suspend the entire shaft with the claw under the bearing and press down on the shaft. Some of the bearings are tight up against gears where it's kind of a bitch. You should do a squish test so you'll need a digital calipers. Some of the bearings require preload and others endplay. Also you'll need some sort of snap ring plyers to get those off as there are a few of them.

* Press
* Gear Puller
* Snap Ring Plyers
* General tools
* Parts washer

Neatness, patience and thoroughness should be added to that list but is a given. If you do decided to do this, make sure everything goes back the same way it went on. For example the hub/sleeve assemblies go on a certain way. They look the same at first look but the outter part is tapered more on one side than the other. The book is a must!!!

Good Luck!
