I would probebly contribute the smokeing and smell to the fact that my rotors have ruts in them and the break pads are trying to grind themselves to the rotors.
Don't they always do that? ;)
Its "smoking" by the way...

mine don't glow, they shoot sparks ;).
metal pads+ cross drilled rotors=stoping good, ask barton :).

you minght want to check the wheel bearings too. When i got my Laser's brake red hot, the bearing fried. :(
