That's how most suvs are these days unless you get push button 4wd like in a truck or awd like in a suby or audi. All computer controlled and usually fwd and rears kick in one it slips. Unless you are going rock crawling or whipping shitties you probably wont even notice.

I heard its the other way around, rwd then the fronts kick in, which would be similar to the Auto setting in my Envoy. I dont like it for snowy days because you start slipping and sometimes at that point its already too late on a rwd where the ass kicks out when it slips, i have a new front bumper that can attest to that. Fwd and the rears kick in I wouldnt mind as much. Next test drive ill really have to try the "AWD" out.

Wait for a snowy day and then go test out a durango in it haha.
But yea a lot of the smaller suvs are based off FWD and then add power to the rears to give it awd when it slips. A lot easier to control thats for sure, versus like the voy would be - rwd and then kicking in the fronts. Thats how my dads tahoe was and I never had any issues driving with the auto mode on.

My rwd does just fine! More stable than for example, an escort with blizzaks and some weird rear hub bearing grinding noise.
It's all in the tires. And the snow mode. Helps people like me with a heavy foot in a pissed off mood during rush hour traffic in the mornings. Consider it the moosah button and not the snow button.

My Tahoe is the same RWD with the fronts kicking in as needed.
My tahoe is RWD and will kick on the front wheels needed in Auto 4WD, in 4Hi it will lock all 4 wheels, but I've been told to only use that on truly slippery surfaces.
Last night I had to try hard to get my Tahoe to get a bit sideways and that was that corner coming into my hood from radisson where it is a sharp turn carrying a good amount of speed and the whole turn lane was covered in snow/ice.
Don't over think it, basic AWD capability and good tires you will be just fine.
Cooper Discoverer ATW is what I just got a 50k mile tire designed and rated for snow and year round use. Def. feels like a snow tire to me, esp compared to the old Michelin LTX M+S.
Those new Durango's look peemp.

Agreed with this. I would have to think the Durango borrows an AWD/4x4 system of some type from either Ram or Jeep. Even if it is a similar system in design to your Envoy, the technology just keeps getting better and faster.

Yea im thinking maybe something is wrong with your Voys 4wd, maybe its not kicking in as it should. Regardless, RWD is doable in the winter as well with good tires like has been said. Need more racer driver practice, hit up some empty parking lots lol.

i believe my yukon denali was the same way. RWD until it sees slipping then goes to awd. The worst thing about that system was the fact that the traction control was horrible, basically if it thinks you are sliding, it essentially applies the brakes. (or so it feels like)

The electronic solenoids in the transfer cases go bad in those smattrac type systems. If you go to a parking lot and do a full lock turn and it's locking up automatically and can hear the tires chirping. The solenoid is bad. I think? I don't remember but check trailvoy.com

Most cars are like that Tom... lol thats what traction control is. Applies brakes where it needs to, disables power to whatever wheels are slipping and transfers power to those that grip. True 4WD will be locked diff style, like in 4Hi or 4Lo, but systems that are not locked will disengage and engage as needed.
I always turn off traction control on snowy commutes, much more fun to drive and also more predictable imo.
