That is the infamous diff pin issue. That spot is exactly were the pins are in the differential. Look familiar? http://www.evoxforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=46307

2008 X GSR center diff pins back out. They were revised for 2010+, which is what Shep uses in the 2008 rebuilds. Buschur and a few others also make their own replacement pins.

Ya, here's a pic of the diff and the broken pins (I think this is it anyways):

I still like Jacks fix over new diff pins. They fix the actual oiling problem vs. new stronger diff pins. That being said I have the buschur diff pins in my car but I expect them to fail at some point.

I should come over and help pull this out so I can learn how to do something hard on my car and save monies in the future.

Actually Jack's Fix is a bit overkill, these gears do not rotate often in the EVO X (has ACD), they do rotate a bit in the 2g and 1g transmissions (open diff). In an ACD config the gears in the center diff only rotate when power is applied and only for milliseconds (the delay can be set by the tarmac, vs gravel vs snow mode.. snow is the longest delay) until the ACD clutch plates actually lock up the center diff. It stays in that locked state until the power is removed and the cycle repeats. So most of the time the gears in the diff don't even rotate, they are idle. They do however see power, and forces while even at a idle locked state. The real issue was the loosy goosy sloppy clearances they used on the diff housings to gear pins that cause them to walk around in the housing every time power is applied that is slowly shearing off the "pins" the hold the gear pins over time in the housing.

What the Buschur pins do is get rid of that slop, so I think you are safe Murlo.
