If you guys have this movie. Watch it again. I just watched this (having seen only brief parts a long time ago) and its very surprising to me that this and our last president didnt watch this as part of their homework.
Read this review/explanation done this past year in a blog. Its very well written and kinda makes you go "hmmm... we are the russians"
I support our troops just like everyone, but the situation that the higher ups put them in is just sad. We are not the russians, but the fact that anyone can see the simularity between the russians then and the US now in this movie really gets one thinking.

The fact that you took a movie plot and applied it to political understanding proves that you're as credible about politics as Elmer Fudd.

The fact that you commented, prior to thinking, or reading the link i put in there, makes you as credible as George Bush. Would you care to do some research before you write. KTHX.

What makes you think I didn't read the link? It's a movie. Even if loosely based on history it is still fiction. Go ahead and think a fictional movie fits in with your political agenda, but I'm not about to watch you compare the very country you're a citizen of to Russia.

Watch me right now.
Yes, its a movie, and its a VERY loose history (basically where the history ends is the russians were there and we were helping the Gallant People, (now the Taliban) rise up against the occupation) of the russian occupation of Afghanistan. But what you seem to be missing is that this movie analysis is not of the past conflict but a current one that was before the movies time.
While yes, the Rambo Movies were mostly, kill kill kill the enemy, fight the war inside a man, yadda yadda yadda, they tend to try and fit in some kind of lesson or thought usually in the end of them.
In rambo 1 and 2, John Rambo came out of Vietnam, and was met with a war at home where the people were not supporting the troops, calling them baby killers, and basically looking at them like the troops were the enemys instead of looking at them like war heros.
In Rambo 3, He went in to help his commander that was captured by the Russian people, and ended up helping the afghan rebels push out the Russian Occupation. Much like in real events Charlie Wilson did with using the CIA to supply the Afghan people with weapons to push the russians out.
Now where you can compare the Russian Occupation to the current situation in Afghanistan, We are occupying Afghanistan to destroy the Taliban (who surprizingly were of the same people rambo was teaming with in rambo 3). This is a war we cannot win, just like we could not win in Iraq. History (Real history) has shown that the Afghan people are one of the most Resiliant people ever when it comes to other nations trying to occupy their land.
If you watch rambo 3 again, its extremely hard not to draw a comparison between the russians and our campaign, but its very difficult to actually say, we are the bad guy in this war.
The lack of learning from history, and seeing everyone in the gulf as our enemy, is sickening. The afghan people were once our ally, now our enemy. and your telling me there is no peaceful solution that doesnt involve bombing the shit out of them?

I get all my political insight from movies, but mostly Megadeth CD's.

Tom's right though. Movies often take plot line cues from real events and popular ideas or fears that people have. It's pretty obvious in horror films if you watch a bunch spanning the last 50 years or more, you can identify exactly what some big issues of the day were.

It's not hard to imagine that other genres do the same thing. SO, why is it so hard for you, Matt, to accept that Tom was not saying, "compare the very country you're a citizen of to Russia." I think he was actually just trying to make you think.

Here's what I think he meant: the fact that anyone can see the simularity between the russians then and the US now in this movie really gets one thinking.
