Swifty recommended me as a part time tech at a local Goodyear. Thanks Swift.

Almost three years later, I'm a manager and get a bunch of Style members great deals!

P.S. For those that know, I hate my second job. ;)

Affording a house by yourself, at this age, is not an easy thing when coming right out of college. I bought my house when I was just about to turn 24, but I had zero college debt (thanks military), and had money saved up as the military is basically a paying full time job.

I have nothing against Swifty, minus the fact that him and three friends hijacked my brand new car for like 4 days!

And on the Military note, I was just looking at the post 9/11 GI Bill, and that thing is insanely awesome!

Fully paid tuition at any state school in the country, 1k towards books a year, plus E5 with dependents BAH! At the University of MN that comes out to about 1500 dollars a month for housing/whatever the fuck else. Not bad at all! And you can take advantage of it for 10 years!

If you are making 80k/year, then I would consider you to be pretty high up on the IT ladder

Keep in mind that I'm 37 and started in IT as a CNE in `95. My title these days is 'network architect' at a Fortune-500 company. You don't start out there...you spend a decade busting your butt.

My undergrad is in business but I have a list of industry certifications longer than your arm. I'm not going to pretend that I know what employers look for at the entry level anymore, but my masters thesis is on the confluence of formal education, industry certification and experience when making hiring decisions (no kidding). These are your pillars...if you are weak on your degree then you should consider overcompensating on the other two.

I'm joining the Air Force and am going to be working on Jet Engines in an Air Conditioned hangar more than likely. Hardly very much of a life risk. But yes, a good majority of our forces are in dangerous places/conditions.

My Dad did the same job based out of Little Rock during Vietnam. I understand the appeal since I enlisted in the Corp, myself (rejected due to asthma). Once you're in you don't have a lot of choice about where you are stationed...the government owns you. I think it's safer to assume that your life actually is on the line because saying 'no' is basically not an option once you are in. Predicting the future is impossible...who knows what war we will be in 2-3 years from now.

Good thing we're in the off topic forum, then.
