I have a stock 98 Gs-t and every now and then my oil light comes on. I'm a noob when it comes to DSM and I want to know what could cause it. I drive it daily and my guess is the oil pump. Any Ideas?

Usually when the oil light comes on it's cuz of low oil pressure. I assume the engine oil is full? That light should never come on, bad things happen when it does.

Are you using 10W-30 oil? I've seen 5W-30 cause the light to flicker at idle during warmer temps on some DSM's.

Same symptoms, oil pump gear came lose, drove on it for two days, then I lost all oil pressure.

Thank god i saw the oil light come on, it was at night, so it wad easy to see.

When I took the timing cover off I had half a timing belt left, very strange.

When the pully fell off to the point that was actually not turning the pump shaft anymore, the light came on.

Could possibly be a bad sender unit. I have a new one you can have for free if you want. Just have to pick it up. But that's probably not the problem.

How does the pressure gauge look when it flickers?

it dims on and off for a bit then stays on. If I rev the motor up it goes away but comes back on. I also notice just last week that I can smell burning oil after driving it.

thin oil in warm weather, worn oil pump, and excessive rod bearing can all cause low oil pressure at idle. honestly my car has been doing this on and off since I bought the car 2 years ago but mine only flickers a little bit everyonce and a while then stays off and it's been fine so far

Mitsubishi oil sening units are pretty prone to failure

More so on the 96-04 models
