why not get an eprom? or even an safc would probably be enough for your set-up.
I don't want a stand alone, and link is a much more expensive route than flash.

Also, I'm curious as to why someone who isn't interested in something is expected to give a damn about what the terminology is for it. Piggy back, standalone, I couldn't give a flying fuck what it's called, I'm not going to use one. I want to do ECU-based tuning because of the flexibility it provides in mapping.

People bought link because there was no other option for 2gs. It seems like almost all of the 98/99 ecus are able to use EcuFlash.

I gave my 99 ECU away years ago. Now it's actually useable for something...
