View Full Version : Coil on plug
I have a 14b stock injectors fuel pump and fpr, what's so wrong with that?
Ohhhh, nothing at all...... Just seems a waste of a COP setup is all.

I had that setup for like a day, sputtered and misfired like crazy, wanna say had one bad coil ( I couldn't find specs to test the coils). Looked cool though! I'd prefer to buy new coils and do it, for piece of mind. Why even bother with used shit.

cause you can get lucky and grab a bunch cheap you just have to find the testing specs

So there's a mixed review when it comes to the COP set-up. From what it sounds like, is that if I am not pushing 600+ then there is no use for a COP system, other than cosmetics. I think it makes it look outstandingly clean, and that seems to be the consensus. But I guess I will have to make that choice once I come to that point.

I bought my coils off ebay. Wired them up according to the diagram in that tuner's link, and she fired up first try. Haven't had a single issue and have been loving it.

Honestly COP setups do absolutely nothing different than the stock coils without a CDI box...
The only benefit is no spark plug wires and it makes the engine look a little cleaner, unless do you it half assed with sheet metal. They are still running wasted spark (where the spark fires on 2 cylinders at a time) and the spark is the same as if you are only running 2 coils (stock).
Now if you want the real advantage, get a MSD or AEM CDI box and wire the coils individually. Then you will see a stronger spark. Even the stock coils with a CDI box will be better than a COP setup without a CDI box.
Dustin, I'm willing to bet that the reason you saw an improvement is because you had shitty wires, coil pack, plugs, or all of the above.
Now in some peoples cases that have a SMIM, no place to mount the coil pack and dont want the wires, sure... It makes it look better, but thats about it.
For the normal person that does this, its not going to cost you $50, unless you cut a piece of sheet metal with a dremel and half ass it together. I personally would never put the setup in that link on my car. Just looks like shit. I'd much rather machine a plate or buy a JM Fab plate for $80 like I did here, although I have an AEM CDI box to control it...
