So, I've got a problem. My turbo's making this "wonderful" noise. It sounds like tranny whine, aka much lower pitched than the usual turbo whine, and the volume is directly related to how far the turbo is spooled.

Now, as far as assumed related problems... Well, I can't spool the turbo anymore without spewing tons of oil smoke out of the tailpipe. I haven't taken apart anything yet, but I believe the turbo is the problem and needs replacement.

Now, as for the good, with the whole oil burning issue, I decided to take the plugs out to check them, and as long as they were out, do that compression test I'd never done on the car. Well, I think this: 199, 195, 194, 196 speaks for itself.

And for the ugly? Well, what do you guys think? New turbo, or worse?

Take the intake off the turbo inlet and check for shaft play.

Is the motor completely stock? Those numbers seem pretty high.

Assuming a stock engine, your gauge must read high, but its great they are all so close!

Yeah, I'm completely stock.

I've read that anywhere from 190-220 is healthy for a 4g63... I'm to assume that's wrong, then?

Anyway, I'm currently shopping under the assumption that it's T28 time.

Yep, sounds like the turbo is shot. T28 isn't a bad option, but isn't that big. If you don't have other supporting mods yet, then it is a good option. Do like Jake said and check the shaft play.

Shaft goes wiggle wiggle wiggle.

Looks like I've got the base of my new desk lamp installed in my car...

I was thinking a t28, actually. But with the lack of local availability I'm seeing, I may just grab a 14b.
