They should all be realatively OK...I have had trouble with WMP9, but everyone else I talked to has not. You really don't need most of the security updates.

Windows security updates are released for a reason. Download all of them and install them. Security patches have nothing to do with compatibility of things such as WMP9.

99% of home users will never need a single one of the security updates, I view them as wasted HDD space...this is just my opinion though. In all honestly, if someone wants to hack on to my computer and copy my files and see what I am looking at they should feel free. I may even offer them a cookie just for stopping by :) I never said WMP9 and the security updates are related,

Honestly, how big are the updates... ? 20? 50mb? Heh.
"critical updates" arent called "critical" just for fun. Also, service packs generally fix previous issues (usability etc... not just security)

What determines whether an update is a pile of shit or not?

Both times I've installed SP1, Windows XP took longer to load and seemingly was not as efficient and quick to work with as it was before installing SP1. If you go into the control panel and into Add/Remove Programs you can see if you can uninstall it. The only way you can do this is if you told it to back up the files it was replacing when you installed the service pack.
