View Full Version : Windows Updates
Yeah, I did have it back up the files (or archieve as they called it). I will look at that tonight.
I did notice that it took longer to start up my computer, still better than it was, but longer than when I had just finished installing XP.
Any others I should avoid??

I havent noticed anything with SP1.. hmm interesting though.
Ive always just updated the security updates and the critcial ones... I have SP1. It may be slower due to all the framework updating of the OS but that is just to fix problems I would think.
Im not sure correct me if Im wrong Matt.

When did I ever say anything about service packs? oh wait I didn't.
DSMChick, you really shouldn't listen to any of us. When installing SP1, you may or may not have problems; if you don't no big deal, you get increased compatibility and added features:
"Enhanced Security, Reliability, and Compatibility
XP SP1 includes a security rollup package that contains all the security patches Microsoft released for XP between its release to manufacturing (RTM) and XP SP1's RTM. The company made many of these fixes during a Trustworthy Computing code review in early 2002.
New Capabilities
XP SP1 includes support for USB 2.0 devices and provides the underlying technology for Freestyle multimedia software, Mira remote-display devices, and the Tablet PC platform. It also includes an optional Microsoft .NET Framework installation. However, none of these technologies are included in SP1; enterprises won't have to roll out unnecessary software, which will speed deployment and aid reliability. XP SP1 also doesn't include Bluetooth support, which Microsoft says it will deliver separately through Windows Update."
The only thing that everyone should do is update thier critical security patch updates. Theres no excuse for not doing it. There won't be any adverse side effects, and you protect you, your personal information, and patch a hole that shoudl ahve already been fixed.
I guess if you never get on the internet / plug your computer in to a network, dont sweat it. As soon as you do however, your at risk. It shouldn't even be a choice not too.
TalonTSI, I wasn't trying to start an argument, but your giving off ill advised reccomendations. If you really question what I am saying, do a quick search on google about it to get a 3rd party opinion.
I tend to agree with eclipseturbo, SP1 has never cuased me any performance problems. there are many factors that go in to what may cuase your computer to start up slower, decrease performance etc.... then again, I never really have "slow" computers.
Whateva, bottom line is: update all critical update security patches; SP1 is generally reguarded as a good update (All new computers ship with it), but if you do have problems, as stated before its easy to remove.

Service pack is great. About the loading times though it doesn't really matter if it is a little longer, or takes up a wee bit more space. My computer boots up in about a minute and a half and I only have to restart about once a month due to small memory leaks.
Also, if you ever buy anything online you will want all of the computer security you can get.

How am I giving ill-advice? It states very clearly in my post that it is only in my opinion. Edited b/c I am a lover, not a hater (ask Tom, he remembers Sat night).
P.S. I am not trying to start fights either, just having myself a good time :)

If you dont restart your computer your memory goes down (gets filled up with processe'sand crap)
I shut mine down everyday... just becuase it takes power... and if Im not using it why should I keep it on.
My new computer starts up on like 20 seconds :3gears:

Memory leaks result from programs that don't efficently shut down.
memory leak - n. An error in a program's dynamic-store allocation logic that causes it to fail to reclaim discarded memory, leading to eventual collapse due to memory exhaustion.
Basically, if it's running it continues to use more and more RAM etc..
