91 Tsi AWD 5speed

Car ran fine, oil filter spun off, had to rebuild the bottom end
compression after rebuild (65 100 70 65) (rings have not seated, engine has not run yet).
New temp sensor -- tried 2 known good ECUs -- ~40 PSi of fuel -- FIC 550cc's -- spark in all 4

The timing is correct! done it on at least 10 timing belt jobs!

While I crank the car, it tries to stutter to life, but fails

I completely disconnect the GM MAF, still stutters.

Any ideas? I have double checked pretty much everything? what else would cause a car not to start?

Thanks alot!

Yep, it is and happens often.

Or, did you put that thin metal spacer between the timing belt and balance shaft belt gears (the one you use to align the crankshaft timing mark) on backwards your timing will be off, and the car won't start. Thanks to a friend, that happened to my old car, wouldn't rev past 3K and was all sputtery.

it was the cas on wrong

Uh, No

Good call JET, it COULD have been the problem.

The CAS was on correctly, I know this because there is a dot on the CAS and a dot on the cams, they lined up properly.

im going to double check the GM MAF.

And thanks swifty, ill look into that, i hope thats the problem.

As you can see from the cell phone picture (sorry for the blurryness) the timing/balance belt separator is indeed installed properly, please note the black crap that has built up over the years is only worn out where the timing belt has kept it polished clean.

And yes, even though it is not shown in this picture, the timing is done correctly.

swapped out ECUs, put 450cc's in and re-configured the GM MAF.

it kidna burped, but then no, nothing....

I pulled the spark plugs and added oil to simulate compression. Kinda added a little much to one cylinder :)

125 - 125 - 200 - 175

Still nothing....

It's worth a shot to just flip the cas around and try. Also, what are you using to tune, and are the plug wires in the proper order?

Actually, its not "worth it" to flip the cas around and "try".
What is worth it is to look at the alignment dots and align the CAS.

1 and 4 go to the front coil.
2 and 3 go to the rear coil.

GM MAF and SAFC for tuning.

what should the karmen read while starting? its at a solid 3 when the car is not running, and it doesnt go up much while cranking...
