View Full Version : On a quest to learn..
So i have tried learning from books.. no way... its impossible for me.
So i am looking to learn how to do some car audio stuff, electrical and fiberglass along with mechanical..
I am curious if anyone has tried going to any local shops and asking or talking to them about letting you help them few hours/day or on weekends with some projects.
Or what are your toughts on my idea..

I have done some fiberglassing this past summer to build my sub box. Its not fun at all, but the end results are nice! I also did some fiberglass work on to build a hydroplane when I was much younger.
I did all my stereo setups as well. If you need any help let me know.
I have a couple tutorials on fiberglass, ill post them when I get home.
I just want to learn how to do it, something else to learn hands on... and get some experience.. i don't learn as well as when i get some hands on time.
If you have good shop recommendations around the town let me know...
If you were to have someone do some work on your car.. who would it be.. other than yourself ;p

I want to build a nice sub box that form fits in the 6 this summer. Something with some nice plexi designs and shit. Fit 1 12" or 2 10" subs. But I'd hate to pay a shop big money to do it for me. So E, maybe I should man up and we can get a garage dirty this summer? LOL
sure.. the problem for me tho is i have a lot more work during summer. so i rather do the learning in the winter... but there goes the second problem, space and heat... the stuff doesn't do well in cold weather hence why i'm looking for some land to start building my new home that would have space in the back for a big garage that i can have heated all the time..
E, you straight up Ball.
How long does it take to make something like a sub box?

I tried getting jobs in car-audio install places back when I was in high school and they never call back, basically, you have to know someone who works there to work there. Just practice by yourself. if you want to build a wood box, use 3/4 MDF and a good tape measure and a nice table saw, woodscrews, elmers wood glue, choose an upholstry of your choice, and apply that with glue and staples, then you have a nice sub box. You can even get scientific and learn how to build an enclosure that will optimize a certain speaker for a specific frequency range. search amazon.com or barns and noble for a speaker-box design book, or car-stereo in general book.
If you were to take a class, you'd have to get a book anyway, so why not skip the expensive part and go directly to learning. I learned by myself by practice, and I have turned out some impressive stereos in my day.

I am also planning on doing a custom sub encloser in the future. I havn't decided if I want to do a basic wood box or if I want to try fiberglassing. I hear it's not really that hard, it just takes lots of time. Good luck with your search!
