A friend recenty bought a Galant VR4 and on the way home the engine siezed (sp?) I have never heard of this, only spun bearings or bent valves. (I'm more familiar with the 6G72) Anyone know what could have happend?

Spun bearings can make an engine seize.

balancing shaft belt broke, timing belt started to shred, oil pump and balancing shaft were very hard to turn, oil looked like it had metal in it, and i think the head gasket poped

Yah the balance shaft was pretty hard to move until broken free. The oil pump turns but was hard until broken free also. The crank DOES NOT move. We tried to turn it and hit a piston down and NOTHING. Today we are pulling the pan and hopefully will get all of our questions answerd.

this was a pic of the top of the same piston that had the shredded bearing, the thing is that there was no broken valves, but you can clearly see that its a broken off valve that hit it.
