I've wanted to do a taller 5th gear when I eventually do a built tranny. I'd think that yea, with only 1-2 mpg better, it would be less stress on the motor at a lower rpm, and with that improved mpg, the gear would end up paying for itself in like...20k miles or something-assuming your car lasts that long. :)
