Hey I did get the taller 5th gear and I would suggest it to anyone. They say the estimate gas mileage is like 30MPG. It cuts the rpm down in 5th gear so it wont rev as high in 5th either. Let me know what you choose to do.

I decided against getting a taller 5th. Went ahead and ordered the Stage 2 Exchange though. My Dodge Intrepid is going to real shit so I went ahead and bought a trans from TRE.

I called the local shop and they want 360$ for R&R on my trans. That's with telling them I already pulled the battery/box and intake and all the stuff thats in the way out. All they have to do is remove axles and DS and drop it. Is that too much for R&R? Should I keep looking?

Bring your car to one of the local sponsor shops (one has much lower labor rates than pretty much any place in the Cities) and I'm sure they can do your tranny removal/installation for a decent price.

The taller 5th gear is a great idea, it'll improve MPG and save wear and tear on your engine.

What is the RPM difference with the TRE 5th gear while crusing at around 70mph on the freeway?

I thought they used to say it was 10%. I would love to dig for facts, but I have dialup.

It says that it is around an 8% taller 5th gear so to my understanding at 3000 rpm of a normal 5th gear this one will rev at 2760RPM. An average of 27-30 MPG. Its worth it. It is only $150. If you were to drive 100 miles a day and got 22 MPG now, then if you got the taller 5th gear you would get say 29 MPG average. That is 7 MPG more. You would save roughly $6 a day. That means in 25 days of driving you will pay for the gear itself and after that you are just saving even more money for additional parts for your car and not gas.

If you want to save gas, get a Prius. You can even get VFAQ tips from Tom Stangl for them now. The old DSM'rs have gone to the gay side.

I don't think your gas mileage is going to go up 7mpg. I currently get 27mpg with the AWD Talon. I would consider 1-2 mpg a decent gain. The car vibrates pretty bad at 80mph with the RPMs at 3500+.

although I dont expect 30 MPG, any increase would be awesome, the larger problem is the high RPMs on the freeway, its loud and annoying.

Anyone who is having their tranny cracked open would be wise to opt for the taller 5th gear.

Under TRE's "Genuine Mitsu Parts" page, they list the gear itself for $220, If it is a mitsu part, shouldnt it be available through brookdale mitsu?

Its about 1/3 way down the page.
