so it looks like the crank pulley on a 2.4 is held on by 4 bolts and a giant center bolt. and that bolt is a bitch!

i have no air impact tools, btw.

i turned the crank until i could fit a wrench inbetween a crank counterweight and some block webbing. still couldn't apply enough torque to the bolt, because the whole block wants to roll over. i was thinking about putting it on the engine stand and trying again, but this method seems a little too ghetto even for me!

any ideas on how to get that damn crank bolt out? the other end of the crank is naked, no bolts, no flywheel. and the block has no pistons/rods in it.

You're in luck. The large bolt does not hold the crank pulley on, just the four small bolts. The large bolt holds the lower cog for the timing belt. You pretty much need a real impact gun and air if you actually need to get that bolt out for some reason.

really? thats how the dsm was. i could have sworn that large bolt was absent from the dsm. hrmmmm.

i'm going to the garage now to yank on that mofacky of a pulley.

Big air impact gun.Yup, only if it was still in the car or atleast assembled.

Have you tried hitting the breaker bar with a deadblow? Do you know anyone with an electric impact? Some of those are good for 400ft lbs, it may work.

Or , put it in your truck and drive to the nearest shop and ask for a hand. Find the guy who has an IR Titanium, if that wont get it off nothing will.

Pretty 97% sure it's just the 4 borrrts Joe. That's all I did on the other 2.4's I took apart.

I had to go and buy a 600 ft/lb impact when I couldn't get a pulley off a Honda. That puppy does the trick every time. You can also crank up your compressor a bit more for special stuff like that as well. I normally have mine at 100 psi, but I crank it up to ~130 psi if I have a bolt that won't come loose otherwise.

And the 6-bolt 2.4 I have uses the DSM crank pulley, trust me, it's only the four bolts. I had the pulley and the timing belt cog all come off and bend some valves at the SO a few years ago. Now I always loctite the large bolt.
