Front Half-shaft Issues...NEED !!MORE!! ADVICE PLEASE

Well I got under my 94 TSi yesterday to change the oil and check the fluids before going to the track and found my outer boot on the passengers side was ripped wide open! Then I looked a bit further and saw the inner on the drivers side had been wide open for some time!

My question to the pros is this...should I just replace them or try to rebuild them? Does it need to be from the dealer or are rebuilds from NAPA, Checker, or AutoZone just as good? I have used NAPA halfshafts on FWD applications in the past and never had issue...but with my plans for high HP #'s this summer I do not want to buy descent now and need the best at a later cost.

Thanks guys!

I use AutoZone half shafts, and haven't had any issues. They are warrantied for life and even include complete breakage. They will most likely have to order the driver side one and you have to detach the part that mounts to the tranny and carrier bearing on the block.

My NAPA shafts have taken 0ver 15 5000 rpm launches on slicks with no problems. your probly better off just buying replacments then rebuilding them.

If you do get one from napa, make sure you keep the box!! I tried to bring my core back in and the bitches wont take it cuz my mom tossed the box. I could really use that $67. And they never told me to keep the box either. BITCHES!

Re: Front Half-shaft Issues...NEED ADVICE PLEASE

I have one person at NAPA that I deal with here in Colorado Springs. Great guy and I have actually waited 3 days for him to return to work for me to buy things from them. Two of the other guys that work there are total PRICKS and think they know it all. One other guy there has worked there for probably two years and still has a hard time pulling part numbers from the computer!!

I like NAPA parts as long as it says made in the USA or Canada on it. Only thing I do not like about the other parts stores is everything says...Made in CHINA. China made parts last about 3 days after the warranty runs out and I am shit out of luck.

Thanks for the replies guys!

Much appreciated

-Kenny

IMOP Beck/Arnley is the best parts for our cars other than OE, and is a US company. NAPA use to sell alot of Beck/Arnley but now you have to ask for it.

Considering that there isn't an inner driver's side boot on the AWD's, I'll assume this is FWD. In which case you get the whole axle from the parts places. Most only sell the outer section from the carrier bearing out for AWD's.

Yeah, just get new axles, rebuilding is not worth the time and frustration.

Re: Front Half-shaft Issues...NEED ADVICE PLEASE

The AWD has four CV boots up front just as the FWD has. The left or drivers side has an outer and inner, the inner is next to the carrier bearing .

NEED MORE HELP PLEASE!

Does anyone have the part numbers for the front right/left half-shafts for AutoZone or NAPA? No one is showing in their computers half-shafts for a 94 Talon TSi, w/abs, w/manual, w/AWD!

I would love to get this thing together this weekend...but at the moment it does not look promising!

Re: Front Half-shaft Issues...NEED ADVICE PLEASE

Well got the oil pan and half-shafts done today! It was a bitch and a half trying to get the circlips to let go of the inner portion of the shafts...but went back together easier than coming apart.

For everyone's info if you care...NAPA p/n's for the half shafts are:

non-NAPA p/n 40-14010 for right front
non-NAPA p/n 40-19281 for left front

Only thing that mattered was that it is an AWD Manual tranny. They list as a NON-ABS axle...but as I found out the ABS clip is on the hub...not the axle itself.

Thanks for everyone's input and help!

So you have an ABS vehicle with non ABS axles? Don't the ABS axles have the gear teeth that the wheel speed sensor reads?

No, the speed sensor ring mounts to the hub which is driven by the same style axle on both ABS and non ABS equiped cars. The axle itself is the same.
