Windshield removal/replacement

Anyone here done this before? My dd has a cracked windshield and I don't feel like shelling out a few hundred bucks to have it replaced, so I was wondering if it's practical to take the good windshield out of my parts car and swap it with the bad glass? Would anybody be interested in giving me a hand doing this sometime?

I have, Its not too bad of a job.You should only need a sharp utility knife, possibly a urethane knife($15), which is just a long, skinny utility knife.Give me a call, I can help

You'll need a heated work area too, working with urethane is a pain in the ass when its cold.

if you cant work in a heated area, hope you have a heat gun. Use piano wire, have a friend help you and go back and fourth to cut it out. its really sharp...

he cut the rubber a little bit and then tried to pry it out which resulted in cracked windshield.. and he left it there and didn't say anything about it..

Yeah, I have access to a heated garage so that's not an issue. I'll have to put both cars in overnight and give it a shot the next day. I'll have to take the broken one out first for practice, and then hopefully pull the good glass w/o any troubles. Eric, thanks for the offer. I'll let you know if I end up needing a hand. It'll probably be a couple more weekends yet until I have time.

Yep, Napa sells the real wire to use to take out a windshield. It is a bit of a bitch, especially on the lower corners. The trick is to wear gloves and go really fast. You actually end up burning the urethane. One person inside and one outside works the best, then just give 'er hell!

The urethane knife is a 1000 times easier than the wire crap.

I think you can get them at Northern, and other local places too.Its also a nice tool to have around for other things. You definately have to use common sense when using it, I've been to the hospital twice for stitches because of that tool, I'm an idiot like that though.
