Re: Borg Warner Turbos

Yeah definately sounds like something interesting to follow. I'm sure you'll have to pay for the R&D effort that went into them though...

Just some other random info as I ended up purchasing a BW turbo for my new project. Here's a little info on how I chose mine. I'm 98% sure this is all accurate, but if someone finds something I wrote is wrong, please feel free to correct it

Some off the shelf ones I was considering were:

S300SX 83-75
Compressor: 60mm inducer, 83mm exducer, has ETT, rated at 68lb/min
Turbine: 75mm inducer, 68mm exducer (old style)

S300SX 88-75
Compressor: 62.99mm inducer, 88mm exducer, has ETT, rated at 75lb/min
Turbine: 75mm inducer, 68mm exducer (new style)

S300SX 91-79
Compressor: 66mm inducer, 91.4mm exducer, has ETT, rated at 82lb/min
Turbine: 80mm inducer, 73mm exducer

You'll see how I noted NEW and OLD style. The turbine wheels on each of these turbos have the same specs, but are actually different. Here's a little pic showing the difference. The one on the 88-75 is pretty much regarded as the better of the two. In fact some are saying for this sized turbo, it's the best designed turbine wheel on the market today.

I was looking for decent top end, while still retaining as best of spool as possible, so I was stuck on those two. Then I found out that Full Race made a custom spec one that pretty much filled that gap for people like myself. They basically took the 88-75 (better exh wheel) but put a different compressor wheel on it, and called it the 84-75.

S300SX 84-75
Compressor: 61.4mm inducer, 84mm exducer, has ETT, rated at 72lb/min
Turbine: 75mm inducer, 68mm exducer (new style)

That's it, just figured I'd share some info for anyone else interested in these, and to hopefully answer some questions to those who've asked me for more info on the turbo I chose.

Also a nice dyno comparison that was done, between the 83 and 88 turbo, using the 1.0 and .91 exhaust housings. You can see why I opted for the .91

Re: Borg Warner Turbos

I really like to see some dyno comparisons against the turbos that are competing against.

Every test is always diff. so they have to infer it would be better if it ran more boost or would do this.

They seem promising, but thats about it.

Re: Borg Warner Turbos

I'd love to see dyno comparisons also. I'd really love to see a comparison of the new PTE's vs. an equivalent sized S300SX. Real apples to apples comparisons, but those are hard to come by. So unless someone else has done it, or you can afford to do the testing yourself, you just gotta make you decision based on the best information you have at hand. I'm just sharing the information I've found.

Also it seems (from my research) that the longevity of these center sections seems to be a bit less troublesome as that of some of the competition which was a plus for me as well.

^Oh fo sho man, great thread.
Shit if it wasn't for you and the random mentioning of BW turbos i wouldn't know anything about them, your thread is the most helpful though.

Re: Borg Warner Turbos

Their new EFR stuff is looking pretty cool. I like the idea of integrated bov and internal wg to simplify the piping. I wonder what they will cost in the end.

Re: Borg Warner Turbos

Yeah I'm excited to hear what they will cost. Depending on the cost, I may have to reconsider my turbo option. If the added cost of the turbo is easily offset by the cost savings it would induce (i.e. purchasing and plumbing WG's and BOV no longer needed), I may reconsider. And while it makes the turbo itself a bit more complex, it simplifies everything else and cleans up the engine bay because of those same things mentioned above (no external BOV's or WG's, and their respective plumbing).

But if they cost $2500, then well I'll just stick with my simple 84-75

Haha billet is what really is the hotness behind that blue, and these ET comp wheels are sexeh! All the other stuff sure sounds pretty amazing on paper; I just hope the built in BPV/BOV doesn't SUCK like the ones that come on the stock vw turbo comp covers. Anna's car came with one--for reference, a plastic 2G BOV from a '97 w/ 140k miles on it held boost better. Seriously. And we're talking 18psi, not 30+ like a lot of us would intend to run these turbos at!

Did they release any pricing on them? I would really be surprised if they cost less than a 1G DSM.

I'm scouring my normal sites everyday and putting up the info here as soon as I find anything out. And so far no pricing...

Here is however a graph someone had made based on compressor maps, comparing different sized comp wheels to what the maps claim they flow. Just some eye candy, take it for what it's worth:
