Can you do AWD swap in the 89-91 colts?

Just a dumb question, can you swap in AWD in the 89-91 colts/mirage hatches?

Anyone know if any of those early 90s Hyundais are like the colts and mirages? (IE a 93 Elantra)?

I've seen Elantra 4G63 swaps, not sure how much harder it is than in a Colt. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=84fZwTzsVW4

And yes, you can AWD swap the 89-91 Colts. There is an AWD specific forum on 4g61t.org you can check out.

Yes you can it is a very easy swap to do. All depends on what skill you have and tools to do it

When I had my stock 89 colt I dreamed of 4g63t awd fun. The swap is well documented on 4g61t.org.

As for the hyundais, I think it's the early 90's elantra's that share a lot in common with the colt/mirage platform.

Re: Can you do AWD swap in the 89-91 colts?

I have a want for a new project, some kind of 4G63 sleeper kind of car. So an early hyundai, 93+ dodge colt or mirage, or an old 88-91 colt hatch. I'd prefer 4 door, I'd prefer not have to hack up too much to do an AWD swap, but my friends and I are more than capable of pretty much any fab work. Anyone have any good ideas on a platform?

Just build yourself a nice gt35r powered colt and leave everyone saying... "WTF!" I would love to have myself a fast colt, just the sleeper aspect is awesome.

There is a lot you can do with a limited slip and sticky tires. I don't think they need to be AWD. The added weight kind of makes the platform pointless, since they aren't terribly light to start with. My stock GT was something like 2560lb with a quarter tank of gas and no spare tire or tools.

Could a Colt with 550whp hook better with AWD or FWD?

I think I know the answer?

id do the early hyundai. I have a 95 elantra and after looking fwd would be no problem awd Might be a little harder cause they have the solid rear axle but im sure you could fab something up for the independent rear suspension and stuff.

The early 90's colts have a suspension similar to 1g fwd dsm's.

I'm just saying, its probably easier to make a 2500lb 1G AWD than a AWD CSM.

And I've seen a 600whp mirage with zero problems hooking up.

Re: Can you do AWD swap in the 89-91 colts?

The only way to do a 4g csm 93-95 is to get a evo 1-3 rear end to make it awd. They are next to impossible to get. I have one of 2 compleat rear ends in mine that made it to the US.
The 3g's are a lot easer to do just need a 1g awd parts car

Hmmm. I'm kinda up in the air. Maybe I'll just gut my 1G and add a 2.4L?

I really like 6pucker's shell for sale on here...

Re: Can you do AWD swap in the 89-91 colts?

I was thinking of a colt project awhile ago and joined 4g61t.org. Alot of good info on there and I read every AWD swap thread. The rear of the colts is very, very similar to a 1g awd. I don't see why people go crazy and say the 1g FWD's cannot be swapped. Anyway I say go for it! You know you want to

They do that because if it came from the factory with an awd option, why not get that. The csm never came with awd state-side.

The 3g csm actually could be had in awd over-seas but they had a solid rear axle instead of the irs the 1g awd has.

But in my case I wouldn't wanna just sell off my clean 1g just to find another 1g but awd that wasn't as clean. Not saying there arent clean ones out there but once you put you're blood, sweat and tears into a car you tend to wanna hang onto it.

Oh no, I completely agree with you. The only way I'd get rid of my Laser is if I absolutely had to or it got totaled.
