Re: Strange noise while cranking.

Post your new pics from today. It looks to me like it's a fitment issue somewhere, not an electrical issue.

Thanks, I might try to order a new starter plate.

Re: Strange noise while cranking.

Also a good thread:

"I dont think the starters are the same for the FWD and AWD. The shaft thats kicks out on the starter for fwd is longer then the one for the awd. Correct me if im wrong."

Ok some info on the 2g starters and starter plates which should clear up a lot of confusion. I just looked them up in Mitsubishi's ASA parts database.

1) All the turbo M/T starters from 94.01.1-96.09.1 are the same whether 2WD or 4WD (MD172860).

2) All the turbo A/T starters from 94.01.1-96.09.1 are the same whether 2WD or 4WD (MD172861).

3) All the turbo M/T starters from 96.09.2-99.04.3 are the same whether 2WD or 4WD (MD172862).

4) All the turbo A/T starters from 96.09.2-99.04.3 are the same whether 2WD or 4WD (MD178511).

5) All 2g turbo: 2WD A/T, 4WD A/T, and 2WD M/T use starter plate MD194962 (seen here: http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/atta...7&d=1345697473).

6) All 2g turbo 4WD M/T use starter plate MD167356.

(Note: all 2g NT use a completely different starter: 04672108AB.)

Note: above dates are xx.yy.z where xx is year, yy is month, z is which 10 day period of the month.

Notice Mitsu doesn't tell us what changed in the different year group starters (as they don't for any parts). If the change wasn't physical or electrical (like a reliability, quality, or cost savings change) perhaps they may work in the other year group. Of course after market starters could be anything but you'd think they would follow suit (unless the Mitsu change wasn't physical or electrical so they could get away with just supplying one starter for all). Let anyone chime in who knows for sure what the Mitsu starter changes are.

Re: Strange noise while cranking.

yeah I read that one, it doesn't cover 1Gs.
Supposedly 1Gs are the same, but some people agree and some don't. I can't find anything that talks about 1Gs.

This:

Plus this:

The flywheel looks very worn down, which would show why the starter gear not fully engaging. The yellow paint you put on the starter shows where it should be engaging the plate, but with the plate's damaged teeth, I would say that is your issue - not the starter itself.

Re: Strange noise while cranking.

^ The ring gear is wearing down now because of the issue. That's not the cause of the problem though.

Seems like it must be some sort of fitment issue. Sorry I made you do all those voltage drop tests haha. That was my problem for sure though, solenoid didn't push the gear out enough but still had a strong crank at the starter motor. At least you know your starter circuit is good now!

No problem man, I appreciate the help.
I leave for 2 weeks tomorrow for the national guard. I'll pull the trans when I get back.
