Real Knock or Phantom Knock?

THIS is scary. 15 counts of knock. Starts around 2500 RPM in any gear, only after cruising for a little while.
Running a S16G, 550s, AEM wideband, OE boost gauge set for 5 counts of knock, 2G MAF, 255LPH fuel pump, stock IC, 6 bolt with 1G knock sensor, run 92 octane or higher from SA in Champlin. Recently threw O2 sensor, IAT, and barometric pressure codes. I contribute the MAF codes to one of the wires coming lose, have since fixed it. The O2 sensor code may be attributed to running rich for so long before fixing the boost leak.
Started happening more recently than before (warm temperatures?) after fixing boost leak at J pipe.
Haven't done any tuning as of yet with Link, just logging files. The knocking starts around 155. Any ideas? I posted on ECMLink and DSMTalk as well hoping to come up with a solution as well.

Re: Real Knock or Phantom Knock?

Considering you said stock intercooler and SA gas in the same sentance I'm going to go ahead and assume that is real knock. The only widely available pump gas in Minnesota worth running is BP (preferably 93-octane).

Re: Real Knock or Phantom Knock?

I got a recommendation to change the knock sensor's settings a bit; 30% throttle and 2500 RPM. Did that and no more knock. I think it might have been picking up the lifters and the BSE.
Of course, the SMIC doesn't help nor does pump gas. I also upped the fuel as well to hopefully help compensate. But given it was at such a low RPM and only happened after so long a time, I'm thinking it was more than likely the temperatures and the lifters ticking after the oil getting so hot.
Really gotta get that FMIC on. Soon.

Again, stop filling up at SA! Their gas is total garbage.

Re: Real Knock or Phantom Knock?

How much boost are you running? Must be some knarly lifter tick, I would doubt that it would pick that up, the knock sensor is a long way away from the cams and is separated by a gasket. I had a rod bearing that got hammered out bad, car sounded like a damn diesel Jetta, and it still only caused a couple points of knock in the ECU.

Re: Real Knock or Phantom Knock?

It's set at 20. But honestly, I RARELY hit 20. Work's a mile away and it's 35 MPH the whole way. I am going to dial it down quite a bit though since I just noticed it hitting 20. The guy that owned it previously had it 'set' at 14, but since the boost leak got fixed, the actual boost is going to the motor instead of the 14 that should be.
It'll take some more fine tuning of course, but since I haven't the slightest on fine tuning I'll be skipping it until MAP can take care of it.
Looks like I will be hitting up the BP from now on then. lol Or Holiday. One of the two...but SA is so damn close.
Any reason SA gas is bad? Figures? Numbers? Pie charts?

Re: Real Knock or Phantom Knock?

More awesome, less suck. I honestly don't know what it is, but my guess is a better refining process and additive package. No to the more ethanol, current regulation limits a mix of 10%, and this is very strictly adhered to. Due to market pricing I would be surprised if anything other than non-oxygenated fuel didn't have the max of 10% inclusion.

wow, hey man I'm in blaine if you want to stop by.

Listen to the others pump is shitty enough without using the watered down crap from holiday or the mixture of shit that SA calls premium. I know there is a mobil up there, I haven't had terrible luck with shell or mobil stations but they are backups to BP.

Cool man, I'd love to. Blaine's not that far away anyhow. Should check out the 240 camber too, it's awesome!

Alright, I'll check out BP and Mobil. I know of the BP and the Mobil that's right down 169 anyhow, so I'll fill up there the next chance I get and toss in some SeaFoam too.

Say maybe that stock inter cooler of mine and sa gas as well explains why i got 27counts of knock at 5600 i think it was. BP Is flowing through my lines it seems to be a lot more knock resistant. Once things warm up it will knock regardless. I need E85! My Numbers were at about 16psi on a evo 3 16G

Sounds about what I'm getting. I get knock every now and then, but rarely. I upped the fuel at 2000-2500 RPM and it went away, happens during WOT or cruise in any gear. Same kind of thing you're getting?
Don't know if it's actually knock, really doesn't seem like it. Fuel at that level's around +5 to +10 if I remember correctly. Don't have Link in front of me so I haven't the slightest of what I set it at, just enough so that it wouldn't pick up any real or phantom knock at that RPM. No knock whatsoever at anything higher than that that's for sure.

There was a thread about that on here, and it wasnt SA. It was some no name gas.
Enjoy bps gas while it lasts, soon it will be a little on the salty side.

Salt absorbs moisture, so basically it will be like little water-injection pellets

Funny because in addition to the salt, they will also be adding water. You can have salt water injection at the pump.
