Question Uprading my 50trim to an SCM60

I just got off the phone with Precision Turbo to see if they allow upgrading from a SCM5031 to an SCM6031 turbo. He said, they sure do. They actually offer an upgrade. He said it would be $400 but I would get $200-250 for my parts: backplate, cover & compressor wheel. Sounds like a pretty good deal to me.

I'm really serious about doing this. Does anyone have any experience with the SCM60 turbo of PTE's? Any cons to doing this? I know I will loose some grunt on the street but I don't screw around on the street anyways.

Thanks.

The turbine(hot) side is identical to the 50 trim, the compressor wheel is slightly bigger. From 2.123" on the 50 to 2.320" on the 60.

So you are sending them your 50trim, they are upgrading it for you for 400 bux. And then they are giving you the 200-250 for the parts, or you have to sell those on your own?

Re: Uprading my 50trim to an SCM60

No, they keep my parts: The backplate, compressor wheel & the compressor housing. I get a credit from that. It would cost me $200-250 for the upgrade. Everthing from the center section to the turbine side is reused. They are the same between the 2 turbos. I don't see how I could go wrong.

Because i have a 90* elbow welded on, there is a slim chance they would just convert my cover to the SCM60. It's not that they can't do it but they only doing the housings in groups because of setup times involved with the CNC. If they are not machining a bunch of SCM60 one day, it wouldn't even pay to setup for one cover.

Re: Uprading my 50trim to an SCM60

The 60-trim has a bigger inducer, 54mm for the 50-trim versus 58mm for the 60-trim. But the 50-trim has a slightly larger exducer than the 60-trim and is more efficient at high boost. The 50-trim is usually rated to flow in the 47-49 lb/min range while the 60-trim is rated at 50 lb/min. So, with both totally maxed out, the 60-trim might be good for 10-30 more HP worth of airflow. The 50-trim has been popular on DSMs, because it does flow a little more air than you would think for the size of the inducer, and it is has the best efficiency at high boost out of all the wheels in that TO4E family.

Re: Uprading my 50trim to an SCM60

Well I knew you would put the scientifics into it and not just a do it, don't do it answer. The 10 to 30 more HP or airflow sure sounds nice, but when you say the 50 trim is more eifficient at high boost, it makes me think that I should hold back. It's a flip, do i keep something that is more efficient at high boost or something that will give me 10-30 more HP?

I do not want something that has a 'powerband' to it. Meaning, for example only works best at like 7900 rpms. +/- 100 rpms, then it's crap. That I DO NOT want.

So in saying that and in your personal experience, would you keep the 50 or upgrade?

Thanks for your time and input on this.

In my opinion if your going to upgrade you should go bigger then a 60 trim. or stay with the 50. Something in the SC-61 SCm-61 is usually the next step from a 50 trim.

I agree. Going from a 50-trim to a 60-trim would be ok, but for your time and hassle, why not purchase a scm61 w/ the 61mm compressor wheel, rated at much more power. Swap them out, then sell your scm50 to someone locally.

Re: Uprading my 50trim to an SCM60

I just looked up the specs on the SCM61. It has a different turbine wheel and all.

450hp SCM-5031E 54mm 2.123" 3.000" 50 3" / 2" 360 Race .63 T31 2.559" 2.229" 76 (This is the turbo I have)

580hp SCM-6031E 59mm 2.320" 3.000" 60 3" / 2" 360 Race .63 T31 2.559" 2.228" 76 (This is the upgrade-to, I was thinking about)

630hp SCM-6152E 61mm 2.416" 3.227" 56 3" / 2" 360 Race .63 T350 2.795 2.437 76

The scm61 seems pretty impressive, the only thing I would have to think about then is the limits of the 2g bottom end. If I knew I could get about $450-500 for my less than 2 year old 50 trim AND if the 2g block would hold up to a SCM61, then I'd maybe sway for that route.

Re: Uprading my 50trim to an SCM60

Yea, for most people the options are 16G, maybe 20G, 50-trim, 61mm or something huge. Most of the time nowdays people skip the 60-trim and 60-1. The 450HP that PTE rates that turbo at is way underrated compared to how they rate the 60-trim. They are just going off inducer size, not how well that compressor wheel is really known to perform. You could make over 450whp on a Dynojet with that turbo but they only rate it at 450hp flywheel, while you will never hit 580whp with the 60-trim. John LaCriox made a lot of power with a 60-trim, but I think he had a T3 .82 A/R version. It is hard to make power with the small Mitsu exhaust housings.

Yup, .82 a/r, shitty ic setup. 519fwhp, S-afc, 532fwhp EMS.
That was on as much boost as the turbo would make though .

Re: Uprading my 50trim to an SCM60

This is off my own topic, but when I spoke to Jim @ PTE about the upgrade, I told him about my boost leak at the compr. cover. I asked him why they don't use o-rings between the cover and the backplate. He said actually they do. Guess what? Mine never shipped with an o-ring. Somebody forgot to put one in.

It's a pretty nice boost leak. How much it's affecting me, I don't know.

Is it internally gated? What is your timeframe if you sell it? I may want one for around $400 before winter.
