Re: Big Brown's Automagic - The last episode in my DSM story.

well the car has come a long way since my last post.
The car runs!!

Thanks to Jim for an EVO 9 fuel pump, brandon for putting in a whole day's work with me and being determined to get that car started.

Short status update till I upload pics and get more time to sit, but the car is alive it made it to primo and back yesterday. There were some weird noises up front on my side, but I have bolts in the frame that aren't holding anything and the noise was dependent on speed not RPM, so I'm happy about that.

The car needs: brakes (have 2G setup, needs rotors and pads), coolant temp sensor. It has oil leaks from: T-case output shaft seal (7 yrs of sitting helped that I'm sure), turbo return line (I have a gasket somewhere), oil pan somewhere, I think oil filter housing ( I didn't use a new gasket because I'm cheap and I have an oil cooled setup to install.)

OK, well I'll be back tonight with pics and a real update.
PS, I'm tired of working on this thing, I want to get to the fun stuff already. :kane:

Re: Big Brown's Automagic - The last episode in my DSM story.

Thanks dude.
Drove it a couple of miles to my cousins place, no problems but that coolant temp. sensor makes cold starts a PITA.

Here is the stock fuel pump:

Here is some old gas about 7+ yrs old:

So I took a look under the car after I worked on the ranger a little bit and I found that have some mysterious leak from above the T-case and its rust colored, not sure what to think about that since the coolant is clean.
Transmission appears to be leaking also from the pass. side axle it has a weird plate their that got pryed on so I think that F'd it.

Next steps are to switch to a air-cooled oil filter housing and cooler setup. I have a complete stock setup to put on the car at which time I will replace the OFH gasket and that should solve that leak.

The turbo return line gasket leaks and I know I have one around so I will replace that at the same time.

I'm getting burned out on working on it, I really want to get to some sweet stuff. Hopefully this weekend I will have my boost gauge and stereo in, so that will hopefully feel a lot better, I might throw in my speakers I have too.

Re: Big Brown's Automagic - The last episode in my DSM story.

I think it drove pretty damn good to Primo overall. If the stereo worked you would have never heard that "noise" It's coming together, and the Auto seems to be shifting well.

Let me know if you need anything else. Get that Alpine in there!!

Also I'm pretty sure I have a coolant sensor. I forgot which one you need though. I know it's one of the two prong ones. Is it the one on the upper half or lower half of the thermo housing?

Re: Big Brown's Automagic - The last episode in my DSM story.

Sounds good.

Boy, progress is sure slow when you clean every part, chase every thread, lots of tedious stuff putting this back together. And it's been so long since I've had anything near a stock setup, I have to look at pictures to remember how things like the stock alternator bracket goes.

Re: Big Brown's Automagic - The last episode in my DSM story.

So after a couple of days of driving, well a handful of time of driving, I have discovered some leaks.

Oh I found the wiring around the thermostat housing is all brittle and one of the wires for the coolant temp sensor was broken, so I soldered it back up and since I have a new sensor on hand, I'm just gonna replace it anyway.
The T-case leaks like a sieve, I have both seals for that.
Turbo return line leaks, I should have a gasket for that.
The rubber lines on the stock OFH leak, I'm switching to the '90 setup.
Transmission/axle seal on pass. side leaks, MAP to the rescue on that then I will put it in.
I have brakes to install and a boost gauge, the boost gauge install will take some time and I am going to be a little creative on that.
On to pics:
Something missing?
Why yes, window motor and track, basically everything to have a working power window.

Thank you again parts car, you have successfully supplied: radiator, running engine, power window stuff, non-abs prop valve, and should be supplying a bumper and hood (in better shape)

Yummy rusty leak action:

Plan of action today consists of getting the car 100% together again leak free, so tomorrow I can cruise around in what should be a nice 70*F day.
Well I had another pic, of what someone uses to hold up a window but it won't load. Basically they used a stick, some wire and a weird rubber antenna looking thing.

Re: Big Brown's Automagic - The last episode in my DSM story.

SO I was out there yesterday and as usual it was full of fun.

T-case: I got one wrong seal from store, I also for sure pushed one in too far but it might work and the other I think went in too far but its thinner than the original. Cleaned it up, its all shiny.

Oil pan: cleaning teh pan and block by hand with a razor blade sucks, I need to get my air tool setup going. I also need one of those 90* air grinder things.

Wiring: Brittle as fuck, found out that the wire for my coolant temp sensor was broken, put in a new sensor anyway since I had it.
Was re-installing wiring and the single wire sensor connector snapped clean off that the sensor, so I have shitty wire connectors yay!

Can't find my 2 oil return line gaskets that must be put away safe as hell somewhere.

Installed '90 OFH, found a banjo bolt and gaskets in my drawer of bolts but I still need one.

Need to pick up my axle seal from MAP today, should get that done and car full of fluids to drive again.

If everyone follows thru with their purchases I should be able to get some injectors and maybe go E85 sooner than later.
Also I found a box with a oil filter and 2 fuel filters!!

That is all, hopefully I'll be back later with some good news and maybe I can finally install my boost gauge.

Re: Big Brown's Automagic - The last episode in my DSM story.

Well the car now has 2g/2 piston brakes OMGZ stops the world!!

I've basically work on the car everyday, slowly making progress.
I need to get 2 more washers for my external stock oil cooler because it leaks like crazy, I think the PS has stopped leaking the stud in the top was loose on this 2nd pump.

Went for a little spin to seat the pads and well something is rubbing or hitting on the drivers side.

T-case still leaks, but slowly I think the output seal is bad again.

Safe to say as bad as I want to drive this thing the constant stupid issues are getting to me.

Tomorrow, I'll be cleaning up the garage and hopefully mitsu has the 2 washers I need for the oil cooler. I also need to install my boost gauge and stereo so I hope i do that too.

Get some stainless steel lines to replace the rubber lines and you'll love your brakes even more!

Re: Big Brown's Automagic - The last episode in my DSM story.

Thanks to munchgsx for helping me out last night a little bit and for driving the car around helping to put miles on 1 by 1.

Figured out the car needs a drivers side wheel bearing hopefully I can get that done sooner than later.

I got my boost gauge install finished up and I'm quite happy with it, but it will be made pretty this winter when I'm not so concerned about driving the car.

Today I will be:
- bleeding the brakes, they feel a little too soft for me.
- Installing my old stereo (alpine), looking at the old deck harness I saw that my old car didn't have the factory plugs and I had to hard wire it in, not this time )
- Wash and wax car
- Get wheels and tires rebalanced, its been a little bit and I'm going to roadforce them so that they can all go in the right place.

That's it for now, I'll be putting pics up tonight as I hope to make it inside before going straight to bed.

Re: Big Brown's Automagic - The last episode in my DSM story.

Ok, I had a lazy day today but I did get parts and get the ball rolling on other shits.
I don't have my camera right now I'm at my aunts, but:

-Found out that I have 2 bad tie rod ends, picked those up today to install tomorrow.
-Will be balancing and roadforcing my wheels tomorrow.
-Order water temp and trans temp gauges to complete dash gauge holder setup.
-Install stereo and maybe speakers tomorrow, speakers are a seperate project that I want to do.
-Wash and wax car, I have a ton of tape residue and the two door strips that are missing still have the tape on the door.
-Saturday, my relays & wiring stuff should get here for my power supply box and could be for a fuel pump rewire if needed.
-Saturday I'm also hoping I win a prize because I'm ready for a wideband right now I should have the funds for either a wideband or injectors.

That is all. Oh I legally got plates for my car today totally awesome this story will be a lot easier to explain in person, but basically I will either get a title in the mail or a letter telling me to get a bond on teh car.
