Porting the oil filter housing??

I just put my new motor in with the balance shaft elim, I knew my oil pressure would be higher than before. It maxes my autometer guage to 100 psi. I was looking around for some info, and on dsmtunerz, I found people talking about oil pressure as high as 120 psi at WOT. Some members said they ported out their oil filter housing to correct the problem. Anyone on style do this to their motor or see similar pressure?

Re: Porting the oil filter housing??

I have a 92 Eagle Talon AWD with a newly built 6 bolt, and my pressure has maxed at 100 psi. It usually is at like 25 psi at idle and 50 - 75 psi, when cruising at like 30 - 45 mph.

IIRC, its perfectly fine to peg the 100 psi guage. I personally wouldnt go around porting out the oil housing man...

Re: Porting the oil filter housing??

100psi oil pressure is indeed too much, its an easy way to blow out oil filters.

I've found picture galleries online before of ported filter housings, i'll see if i can find them again.

for what its worth i also plan on porting my housing, i just havent gotten to that point in the build yet.

Re: Porting the oil filter housing??

I did it, my pressure never goes over 80psi. It's real simple, you just enlarge the pressure relief port and chamfer the edges. Quick and painless. It doesn't affect your regular oil pressure, it just allows more to bleed off.

Oil pressure also helps keep the motor and bearings cool, 120 should be fine aslong as filters and gaskets are not blowing out all the time. I would look into a restrictor for aftermarket Garret turbos(ie PTE turbos) if your pressure is that high though.

Here's the thread I found on Tunerz. There is a link a few posts down that has pictures of the oil filter housing before and after.

After about 70 psi you start to see bearing babbet washout if pres. is held at this pres. for extented periods of time.
