Hopefully its good. For the same price, his motor could have been built brand new including new valves/seats and guides and it would have had Mivec seeing his is a Evo 9.

What seemed a little sketchy was this from the owner:

Re: Rebuilding motor, need suggestions

So this is the plan... get motor do leakdown. Pull off the head buy a complete oem gasket set send my ix head to tc in kato get a flow test leak test valve job install the gsc springs and retainers and new oem valve seals with my ix cossy m2 cams. THAN get map mivec line (bolts into stock oil pres sending unit or stock oil filter housing. Than either move the oil pres unit to oil filter housing or making a line to go from housing to head. Than I can keep mivec and have a built head as well to rev out to 8k.

Sell the gsc s3 cams and evo 8 head.

If leakdown is bad I will make a claim or sue him for my money and my banker said they have nioproblem doing that since he told me and my banker he gaurantees its a new good motor nothing wrong hes parting out his car is the only reason hes selling it. (I had my bank send the money just for the protection as well incase anything happened) he seemed super cool and the motor is at topspeed not in that guys hands. He told me topspeed took the motor out before anyone asked for tests.

Re: Rebuilding motor, need suggestions

Just curious you seemed a little worried about overall cost so was this really the most cost effective route? At least you have yourself covered by going through a banker. Plus it sounds like you have a good plan and can keep the mivec. Hope everything works out good!

Re: Rebuilding motor, need suggestions

Plus I won't have much downtime without a car. A week maybe? And ill make money back by selling the 8 head and gsc s3 cams and my stock 9 block. I got the motor within my budget, with paper work and his word its perfect. With a note etc. We'll see what happens. I just dont get why because I didnt spend my money at map I get criticized, I had a budget and made it happen. I wish you guys would help me and such but if not oh well.

I'm personally not trying to criticize. You've laid out your plans well and seem to have done your research on what needs to be done. Me personally I've been burned on deals like this before so I tend to be skeptical of used parts that's all. I'm glad you were able to keep everything in your budget. I'm looking forward to seeing your results. And if you were a little closer to me I'd be more than happy to lend a hand

Hopefully it all works out man, if it does, you should be able to get a god chunk of change back from the VIII head parts.

Re: Rebuilding motor, need suggestions

Thats what I thought too. Map said they would give me $400/$600 for the bare core if I didnt sell it privately. Plus than I can sell the gsc s3 cams (no idea what they go for at the moment) than I can put the springs and retainers in my ix head with my cosworth m2 cams.

Ouch. Seems sketchy already to me...plus all the modification and swapping of parts it's going to require... Good luck to you, but my guess is you just cost yourself more money by the time this is all said and done while also adding extra headache. I hope it all works at favorably as you're planning though.

I'd be neverous the head is bad on your motor but by getting it checked out hopefully if anything is wrong they can get it fixed.

Good luck on the build! Should be cool when it's all done

This, especially with the history of that car and heads.

Re: Rebuilding motor, need suggestions

Well I talked to chucke and he said he put a new head on my car. So I guess we'll see when I have the shop test it.

Are the evo 8 and 9 valves interchangeable? If so the head I got with the motor has fresh valvetrain including valves so if they are ill probably throw the new valves on my ix head as well. Than seals come with the oem gasket set so if the head isnt warped or anything serious itll pretty much be a brand new head when its done.

Re: Rebuilding motor, need suggestions

imho the head needs to be gone through by a machine shop, just like we talked about.

I wouldn't take parts from a perfectly good head but that's just me; I'd keep it as whole as possible to get the most resale value out of it.

You are bordering on the line of 'doing it wrong' so be very careful. Remember to keep it simple.

Speaking of headgaskets, you might want to look into how you run an IX head on an VIII block, I'm pretty sure you just use the IX headgasket but I do not recall for sure.

Re: Rebuilding motor, need suggestions

What do you mean doing it wrong? As I did post im having tc automotive in Mankato go through my ix head. Id like to take the gsc springs and retainers from the new head though.

Yep use a ix head gasket.

Re: Rebuilding motor, need suggestions

If it's a good built VIII head, leave it alone and sell it as-is. Once you start stripping it down it'll become worth no more than any other used VIII head. Cams are one thing, but leave the valves and springs alone.
