4g63 twin turbo.....kinda

Well in reality its compound turbo chargeing. I know not everyone has dsmlink and is on the dsmlink forums but this is something going on over there. What you guys think.

Re: 4g63 twin turbo.....kinda

I've been following his build as well. I'm not an expert when it comes to compound setups, so all I can say is I find it interesting and cool what he's doing, and I hope he finishes it so I can hear how it works out for him.

Do both compressor wheels flow into the intake pipe? So one turbo gives lower rpm boost, and then the big turbo gives high rpm boost?

Pretty sure the smaller turbo's outlet feeds the larger turbos inlet.

I thought it was normally done the other way around? Large --> Small --> Motor.

So there's a 2.25" intake pipe for the whole thing? You would think there would have to be a separate intake pipe for each turbo, then both outlets merge into the fmic at some point.

Re: 4g63 twin turbo.....kinda

Yes they do both have inlet pipes. But the smaller turbo usually feeds into the larger turbo's inlet.

Here's a nice shot of another compound setup to better explain

Seems like a lot of fucking around.

Big turbo, then install in the trunk

/case.

Re: 4g63 twin turbo.....kinda

Not sure I'd call it compound turbocharging so much as a sequential twin-turbocharged setup. AMS killed their project (that pic is from before the 1000hp on 100octane challange) due to time constraints. Would be very interesting to see one in action, but in reality I think it's gonna be a huge PITA and super unreliable. More than double the parts to break, and furthermore, the big turbo will *always* be restricted in the amount it can flow due to the small turbo's turbine wheel always being in the way of exhaust gas flow.

Still, neat. Post updates as they occur!

Ya was pretty complicated.. if you look at this pic tho it looks like the small turbo would get completely cut out of the loop, so the big turbo wouldnt get restricted. kinda cool, reminds me of that twin charged evo that could never get tuned right tho. Are there any working setups like this?

On the AMS car yes, but this DSM project it would not; check out where the second turbo is fed from

I like it for the fact hes trying something new. If people listen to all the ridecule and never try to make new ideas then the DSM world will die out, its people pioneering new things and ideas that keep us going. You must be a young and stupid DSMr in able to get to be an old and wise DSMr

-I was going to post that AMS picture but i couldnt find it, thanks

Re: 4g63 twin turbo.....kinda

Mark my words, this is not viable.

the resistance of the TD05 turbine wheel will ruin any HP gain with the larger turbo.

but, as always, I hope I am incorrect.

Good luck fella!

Re: 4g63 twin turbo.....kinda

Well Theoretically speaking the boost from the small turbo would make it to the motor before the big one starts doing much right? Or does the small turbo boost get stopped/slowed by the big ones compressor wheel?

Re: 4g63 twin turbo.....kinda

I'm wondering about the amount of 'new' weight spung out there so far forward of the front suspension.

Re: 4g63 twin turbo.....kinda

I guess I've never really seen much for twin turbo setups... I know these are all compound but, I wouldnt think there would be much benefit to going compound on a small displacement motor unless you have tiny turbos...?? But, if that were going sequential the small turbos compressor would feed into the exhaust side of the larger turbo? Or, am I totally off base on my thinking here?
