Check this out, it's a good design. It has good triangulation with the best weight savings. I'm building this one:

Re: Mark's 1G Winter Projects

Yeah that one looks good. I'll have to save that one for making my own. Looks like the hardest part is the ball joint receivers. I'm assuming heim joints will be used to connect lca's to k-member.

Re: Mark's 1G Winter Projects

Quick update. If have been making parts for the kmember project. I made the tube tabs or chassis brackets, whatever they call them. They are made from 4130 and took forever to machine. I have all the materials so now I just need to get fabricating.

And on the engine project I decided to upgrade my headstuds using the boostin performance 1/2" kit. You need to machine and install 1/2" timeserts in the block to accept the new stud. The machining is not the easiest, and if there are any mistakes the block is junk. So I measured everything to insure my mill and block were dial indicated in. Then I started by finding the hole centers individually with a dial indicator.

Then it was time to drill the block to a depth of 1.45"

Then you need to sink the timesert under the deck, like how the original studs are setup. I cut to a depth of 0.175" with a 5/8" endmill cutter.

Now it's time to tap the threads, using the mill.

Install the insert with the installation tool in the timesert kit and move on. In the first picture there is one installed directly in front of the hole that was being indicated.

The cylinder head needs machining next, to clearance or ream the holes and to add a machined in load washer. My custom pistons are going to arrive at the end of the month.

Re: Mark's 1G Winter Projects

Nice work!

For those chassis tabs is it needed they go around the tube? Could they just have a radius and be welded on.

What kind of machining equipment do you have?

The reason they are round is that I can mock the suspension up without needing to weld any thing up.

I've got a bridgeport mill, a 14" gunsmith lathe, dake johnson vertical 16" bandsaw, a decent size horizontal band saw, and a lot of other supporting equipment.

Re: Mark's 1G Winter Projects

Awesome! I'm looking forward to seeing how the stud kit holds up for you. I've had my eye on that kit since it was released. I was slightly disappointed that the 6 bolt requires Time-Serts while the studs directly fit the 7 bolt after rethreading the hole. I'm sure it'll work great. I've seen Time-Serts fail in aluminum blocks and that's created a bit of unfounded bias since the 4g63 is cast iron lol.

Re: Mark's 1G Winter Projects

On to the next step. I filled the block yesterday. I ended up going about 1 inch down from the deck surface, I think that's considered a three-quarter fill. It was my first time messing around with block filler. It's not the easiest stuff to work with, since the water holes in the deck only allow you to use a small funnel when filling. And the stuff is messy. Thanks goes out to John for letting me use one of his torque plates. Applying 110 lb/ft to the head studs is weird, it's like tightening lug nuts. The rubber hose allows insurance that there is a water path from the pump. They are easily removed when the block filler is cured. I removed the water pump block off plate after 10 hours and removed some semi cured filler material to insure proper water pump functionality. The next step is to get the block out for line honing the mains.

Re: Mark's 1G Winter Projects

Now that the block is at maperformance for machining I'm starting my kmember fab. First stop is measuring everything and get a starting weight.

72 lbs, it has all the bolts, brackets, and driveshaft loop. I know others have weighed just arms and kmember at 64. This is going to save a ton of weight!

Are you running a stub shaft or turned down "race shaft" for the balance shaft?
