anyone tried a VGT or VNT turbo on a dsm?

The title explains it all. Just wondering because I haven't heard of anyone doing it yet so I figured it might make for a good discussion.

Most of the ones I have seen are too small for a DSM. I think the new porsche ones are electronically controlled, which should work much better.

Ya but they're still not nearly big enough. We want a 35R-sized one that will spool at 2500rpms! Well I do, at least

How about a turbo taken off of a Powerstroke 6.0 diesel? I don't know what the model number is comparable to, but it is a garret and here's a link to some pictures I found of a shot one on e-bay.

I wouldn't mind a 60 trim that would spool at 2000.

There are some limitations though. A motor can only take in so much air, if you spool a big turbo too fast on a small motor, you get compressor surge. GT35R/61mm turbos spooling normally have compressor surge problems on 2.0l DSM and Evo motors, unless you have a ported shroud/anti-surge cover, which lets some of the backing up air flow back out the front of the turbo, instead of causing the compressor wheel to abruptly stop.

Haha, I just suggested the Garret off the ford because I'm around ford trucks, not dodges. But nah, I think we ought to put at least a little bit of research into these turbos.

Why reinvent the wheel? Fifteen years ago, you had about two options for an upgraded turbo for your DSM, now you've got a hundred. Pulling some turbo off a totally different rig doesn't save you any money, and the compressor and turbine wheels won't be nearly ideal for your hooptie.

Re: anyone tried a VGT or VNT turbo on a dsm?

The Ford turbo is a Variable Geometry/Vane Turbo. If I had a car and some spair cash, I definitely would try this out, but I don't have the ability to, so I'm going to try and do some research to see if its even slightly feasible.

Here is a clip out of the Wiki for the Ford 6.0 powerstroke.

"There were also minor problems resulting from the unreliable factory variable-vane turbocharger"

Probably not one you want to try

Re: anyone tried a VGT or VNT turbo on a dsm?

If you people want boost so fast setup a raily style antilag. If you have a setup that spools fast its going to choke up top (road race/auto cross), if you have a setup that is laggy but makes good power up top its less "streetable", if you need boost all the time to drive your car normaly. The DSM is not a good jack or all trades car, if you try this it ends up sucking at everything.

I had a 60trim on my car back in the day, with a 2.0 motor, stage 3 exhaust wheel and a .82A/R housing the thing would surge like crazy from ~4500 - almost 6000rpm, So if you had this turbo spool faster it would only make it worse.

You're right, I drive an 05 F-350 with a 6.0 with 80k miles on it, it just started acting up this past week, I need to pull it apart and polish it up, unless its covered under the engines warranty. Please also remember that these turbo's are being used on diesel engines, when is the last time you saw your car exhaust a cloud of black smke and soot? I was just using this turbo as an example of a turbo that's not nearly as small as a VNT-25 Garret like is on the VW's.

I'm not trying to reinvent the wheel, I'm not trying to get a jack of all trades turbo, and I'm not trying to look like a fool on this forum, but you guys seem to want to burn me. I have nto been able to get any results for information on the sizes of the turbine, housing, compressor cover, or wheel, my ford buddies just aren't cooperating.

Don't the variable geometry turbos have an electronic control system coupled to them as well?

Bring it to the dealer right away, it should be under warranty. I just sold an '05 F350 with the 6.0, they have a problem with the high pressure oil pump fitting wearing out, which happened to mine at 101K. Cost me $1800 to fix, not to mention a week of sitting in hillbilly heaven, Norwalk Ohio. They might have covered it if I brought it to the dealer, but I ended up taking it to a big diesel mechanic since Ford wasn't open on Saturday.
