Shifting gears

Okay, my brother has been driving like this, 1,2,3 and than to 5th. He skips 4th. I just got my driver's lisence last wednesday and i've never revved it or drove it hard. Now he's blaming me that i did something with the tranny. The car is a 97 Accord EX. I'm just wondering if its a bad thing to go 1, 2, 3 and than straight to 5th. I've never done this shifting before, just wondering if its a good or bad thing shifting 1,2,3 than to 5th.

Re: Shifting gears

Nah- there isn't anything wrong with that. If i'm eating or something while driving I'll skip gears like that all the time, go from 2nd to 4th, 1st to 3rd or whatever. If the rpms are high enough to do that, it's fine otherwise you'd bog the motor way down.

I would love to know what you were doing or thinking about when you made that post, but as you said wouldn't be a problem for the gears in the tranny. Girls on the other hand...

Re: Shifting gears

It puts more wear on the synchros to skip-shift like that, its not good driving practice to skip gears w/o double-clutching when up/downshifting.

Re: Shifting gears

sooo, eventually, its not a "good" thing to do? I've been driving manual for at least 8 months now, and me personally, i don't like skipping gears unless i really have to.

Re: Shifting gears

i love skipping gears. it lets me evenly distribute the hate on my gears. now if only i had a camaro, i could go balls out and do a 1-5 shift and still keep up with traffic
