Thumbs down 1G Awd getting rid of that ugly hump in the trunk

i have been searching for hours for a picture of what our 1g gas tanks look like removed before i cut in to that hump good thing i did .... Click image for larger version

Name:	hump.jpg
Views:	622
Size:	105.6 KB
ID:	11246

one way i was thinking on how to do it is cut it in a x pattern and folding it down and welding it. would it work ? anyone cut in to these is the metal thick or light ..?

the reasoning behind this is i have to fit a lot of stuff in my car for the move and i dont have a lot of space the hump cuts it down a bit and makes it so there is no room for a sub if i wanted one ... and i want one in there

with the factory spare and wood in there you get 6-7 in from the top of the hatch to the floor with the hump removed id get 14.5 H 36 W L 28 with the seats up

It seems like just removing the spare is what gets you the most room, that's a lot of work for only a small amount of additional space.

Do what I did, install a trailer hitch and then add a cargo rack or pull a small trailer

where you moving?

Well unless your the worst welder in the world, yes the metal is plenty thick to cut/fold/weld. But what you should do is cut the hump out and get a fuel cell to put under there instead, thats what I did.

well way back in my uber noob days i too hated that hump. so i bought a large hammer and i proceded to make it flat. now ive never had any problems but DONT DO WHAT I DID. i belive under that hump there is a gas vent/tube on top of the gas tank and the tank itself might come up a bit into the hump. i just got lucky that i havnt had any major problems with my dumb move

Don't move in a hatchback. Rent a truck.

When i moved from MN to Cali, all i did was load up the 99 GSX. Surprizingly fit a lot of stuff in there. The essentials mostly, TV, Clothes, computer and some other stuff. If you dont have a lot of stuff, go for it.
If you have a lot of stuff i would def recommend getting a POD. When we moved back to MN we used PODS and it was the best price and didnt have to worry about driving a truck through the mountains. We saved a lot of money on gas and moving expenses doing it this way. Plus they set it on the ground so you dont have to walk up a ramp every time. I will def be using them again.

Re: 1G Awd getting rid of that ugly hump in the trunk

2G's are easy, the gas tank is under the rear seat and there's a ton of room in the back. For the 1G, the easiest way is to cut out the hump in the tank completely, and weld a flat patch panel to it. You have to do the same for the trunk floor anyways. Remember to fill your tank with water before you start cutting it though, your eyebrows and arm hair will thank you.
