I am looking to buy a 91 GST. The owner tells me that it's got an oil pump problem, other than that, it runs fine. After talking to a mechanic, I'm beginning to think that it may not be just an oil pump. Before running any diagnostics or compression tests, is there anyway to find what other problems are wrong with it? I 've had 2 people tell me that oil pump problems are not common in DSMs. I haven't seen the car yet, so I can't tell if there are any problems yet.

Oil pump issues are fairly common on DSM's for different reasons. Depending on where the car is, you should probably take it to us (QPR) or Elite and have them look at it before you buy it. If that isn't possible, find out as much info on what symptoms it has that the guy believes it is an oil pump issue and post it here.

It would be smart anyway before buying a DSM to have a shop do a leakdown and compression test as well as check crank end play before you buy one. You can save a lot of money in the long run by spending a very little bit up front.

How are you going to get someone selling a car to let you test crank end play? That means ripping out the tranny?

No it doesn't. I have checked it for several people buying 2G's. A properly placed dial indicator on the front of the crank pulley and a little bit of gentle prying is very effective at checking end play.

Also, another word of caution... When there are problems with oil pumps, the oiling issue can cause other MAJOR problems. Now, I am not saying that is going to happen, or has happened on this car. But, I am warning that cars with oil pump issues can also have oil pressure issues which lead to some serious damage. Just a thought...

But seriously, I was just trying to make people aware of other issues that may be lurking on the car. :fworld:

I asked him Monday what indications he might have for thinking that the car has an oil pump problem and he couldn't give me a reason other than saying that his mechanic thought it might have one. I told him I wanted a diagnostic done on it and I haven't gotten a call back yet...if I was in Minny, I would take the car by you guys, but I am in Missouri.

Well then try to find an honest mechanic down there to diagnose the "problems" the car may have.
