Gun control debate

When is enough,.... enough?

Does anybody here believe that making it harder for law abiding citizens to purchase or poses firearms is going to make a real difference? I don't.

Do you believe law abiding citizens should have to jump through more "hoops" to exercise their Constitutional rights, guaranteed by the Bill of Rights? Both of which are in place to limit the government, not you as a law abiding individual. And who gets to decide how you can defend yourself, or your family from harm?

What about due process?
What about innocent until proven guilty?

The "gun show loop hole" is a bag of tricks, all gun sales by retailers, whether at a store or a gun show are required to perform back ground checks prior to the sale. If they are not being performed, then go after the seller.

Thoughts?

I think secretly obama has large personal investments in the various gun and ammo manufacturers and he's raking in millions. Just kidding, he's not that bright.

Re: Gun control debate

Im fine with more background checks and regulations, nothing is being outlawed and "law abiding citizens" can still go buy their guns - even semi auto rifles, just like they were saying would be outlawed a couple years ago. Nothing has changed. Obama isnt taking your and my guns away. Whats wrong with more regulation, knowing who has what gun or who applied for what? Im all for more basic regulation, it doesnt hurt as long as its not another huge federal money waster. Mental competency tests are the real kicker if they want to regulate, but what constitutes mentally okay?

While it might just be a horse and pony show, I would say that america does have a gun problem, even though I have a couple at home. Our society is integrated with them, so I dont see them going away in our lifetime. Heck im sure people will be able to use a 3d printer to make them at home soon if they arent already.

I also feel there are much larger issues that contribute to mass casualties these days. Alchohol is one example of being a huge cause of death. Healthcare and the food industry is another massive money making scheme that has no focus on the real good, but thats another thread. lol

Does anyone have the cliff notes of what all is being instituted? Just factual cliff notes, not cliff notes with an agenda mixed in with them.

Re: Gun control debate

We already have basic regulations and federal background checks. How much more regulation is needed or acceptable? They know as soon as you buy it. If you have no criminal record, where does punishing the law abiding citizen end? What is the end game in all of this?

Anybody think looking at the family structure might be more important? Maybe start teaching gun safety in schools again like was done for decades during the last century?

It seems to me we keep looking at the wrong thing on this, it's not the guns. There are estimates of more guns than citizens in this country and yet, by the numbers, we are still very safe. Add to the fact we're probably safer because of it.

Re: Gun control debate

That's where it seems you are wrong.

Long cliff notes for B:

"The executive actions are designed to curb violence from a number of different angles. The most important initiative is the administration's attempt at closing the notorious "gun show loophole": a gap in current law that allows guns to be purchased from private vendors at gun shows and online without the purchaser being subjected to a background check.

"It doesn't matter where you conduct your business: from a store, at gun shows or over the internet. If you're in the business of selling firearms, you must get a license and conduct background checks," the White House said in a statement emailed Monday night, outlining the policy.

The executive actions also call for a $500 million investment to improve access to mental health services, as well as changes to bureaucratic rules that impede the ability of the current national background check system to tap into databases that track people who are banned from obtaining firearms for specific mental health reasons.

Moreover, the White House announced additional funding for enforcing gun laws through the the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. The FBI will also be overhauling the background check system to make it more efficient and hiring more than 200 new examiners and staff to help manage that process."

I see nothing wrong with these changes. Not sure why you would. Mental health care in this country is lacking in a major way. Its going to be hard to tackle that part, but this is a step in the right direction. Like I said before, nothing is really changing for existing gun owners or potential buyers who are "law abiding" as you say.

By the way Im not a liberal either. This just makes sense all around.

Re: Gun control debate

If a business is selling guns at a gun show, the laws are already there and in place.

http://smartgunlaws.org/background-checks-in-louisiana/
From the Louisiana page, but federal law extends to all states:
"Federal law requires federally licensed firearms dealers (but not private sellers) to initiate a background check on the purchaser prior to sale of a firearm. Federal law provides states with the option of serving as a state “point of contact” and conducting their own background checks using state, as well as federal, records and databases, or having the checks performed by the FBI using only the federal National Instant Criminal Background Check System (“NICS”) database."

Now I would hope all dealers at a gun show are registered dealers and not just Billy Bob "Big Gun" Johnson selling his used .38 special.

Private sales are just that, private sales that can't be tracked other than a bill of sale. So that is a bit tougher.
