Drag Tire Recommendations

Looking for any recommendations for my drag tire setup. Key note is this is meant to be a budget poor man's drag setup, not a $1000 Weld wheel setup.

I currently have a pair of FD rims (16x8) that I got for cheap that I'd like to use in the back. Considering the rim is only 8" wide, I was thinking I ought to keep the tire width no wider than say 11" (275). I want this to fit in my wheel well as is also.

So now considering I know just about nothing about slicks, here's some thoughts I had.

My inspiration on this wheel setup was Reid's budget drag wheel setup. Keep in mind this is a Supra so I believe his rear wheel wells are probably a little wider. He also ran 295 tires (11.5") which to me seems a bit wide for an 8" wide rim. He's also around 1000hp I believe where I'll be closer to the 600-700 range.

Thoughts? I'd like to stick with one of the DOT tires vs. a full on slick, but again willing to hear what anyone has to offer because I'm a drag slick newb.

Re: Drag Tire Recommendations

R2 ET Streets are the only way to go. Research 275x or 10.5w legal tires. Those compounds are amazing.

Re: Drag Tire Recommendations

Sor ET Streets (R2) I se MT has this style in a 255 I could run (10.5" contact)

http://www.mickeythompsontires.com/s...ETStreetRadial

So those for my Drag FD Wheel setup? Then Something a hair more streetable for my standard 17" Supra wheel setup I run on the streets?

Re: Drag Tire Recommendations

MT radial 26/10.5
Section 10.5
Tread 9.6
29lbs
Radial No flex in the sidewall

MT ET street 26/10.5
Section 10.3
Tread 8.3
22lbs
bias ply tire

Hoosior QTP 26/9.5
Section 9.3
Tread 8
Weight doesn't say.
I believe they are a bias ply tire

Based on your rim size and there being 5" of side wall I would use the QTP it will give you the best and most even contact patch if there are aired properly! Also once the tire stands up it will pull the section width in and use all the 8" of tread on the ground.

Some tire manufactures use measurement on the inside if the tire and some on the outside. Example: M&H tire reads on the side 25/8.7/13 but show on a tape measure 10" wide contact patch!

Re: Drag Tire Recommendations

Thanks Nate,

So with that all being said, I could run the ET Street Radials on my 17" street rims in the rear for street duty since this will be a fair weather car. Then for drag strip I could throw QTP's on my FD 16" rims. And since they are Bias ply, I'd probably want to throw some kind of skinnies on the front... ?

Re: Drag Tire Recommendations

Have you considered something like the Nitto NT05-R for the street, and one of those track drag tires for the strip? How many miles do you want to get out of a street tire for this car?

Re: Drag Tire Recommendations

OK, so right now I have 17" Supra wheels on the car. The rears are 9.5" wide. These are the everyday normal wheels I plan on running for awhile.

Then I have a pair of 16x8 FD wheels I got awhile back for cheap, with the intent that they would be my drag setup with some slicks or whatever. Only swap them on at the track basically, not a street use kind of application.

So with that being said, the 17's right now I was going to leave alone since the tires on there still have a bit of tread left. But eventually yeah I'd probably be wanting to get something like NT05R's or 555R's or ET Street Radials or some kind of badass street tire on there to plant the power. Miles, I dunno if I could get like 10k miles out of a set that'd be nice, but just pulling that number out of my ass. The car gets maybe 2k put on it per year right now.

So that's kind of my bigger plan. 17's are the street setup, with a pair of 16" FD rims to swap on at the drag strip. And since I've never really boughten slicks, drag radials, etc, looking for some advice.

I believe you'd have to do skinnies up front, yes.
