Trany issues

My trany got overheated most likely and from my limited knowlede...from what i know about metals is that i'm screwed.

Once metal starts flaking it means that it has been heated up above designed temperature and its starting to flake..which means the tensile strenghth of the metal has changed and has become softer.

Which means that it will work for some more time but it will start wearing out more rapidly.. until the gears are rounded out completely..

am i right?

Sounds about right...those flakes are probably chunks of gears and/or synchros. Looks like that leaky axle seal was the death of your tranny

I had brass flakes in my tranny and was told it was from running GL-5 fluid in the tranny. I guess it eats up the yellow metals (brass syncros). Or so I was told.

You are correct, GL-5 (such as Mobil) eats the synchros in Mitsu trannies. I tried telling that to Reid since he just put it into his Conquest, but he won't believe me. Too bad for him I guess...I warned him and he disregarded it and said something to the effect of "Its Mobil, it can't hurt anything."

Mobile One Synthetic 75-90 was exactly what I used. It took six months and 1000-1200 miles or less to ruin the first syncro.

Redline is GL-4 which is perfect for DSM trannies.

I don't suppose you know if a fluid that's rated GL-3, GL-4 and GL-5, would be bad for the syncros?

GL-4 was just stated to be good for DSM trannies according to TalonTSiDude (Chris), hopefully some one can answer for the other two.

I would assume that aslong as the fluid carries the GL-4 rating it would be safe for DSM trannies. Which type of fluid are you looking at the carries all 3 ratings? Here are the known fluids which work in DSM trannies:

Redline MTL/MT-90
BG Sychroshit I and II
GM Synchrofart
Amsoil
Royal Purple
