1g overheating.

my car overheats, fans turn on at 196, new 160 t-stat. WP has about 10k on it tops. koyo radiator, 1 12" and 1 10" fan wired to turn on like stock.

Whenever i drive around temps stay around 200 sometimes more, will go over 210 if i do a pull.

Don't know what else to do, gonna replace the cap with a 16lbs one and put in water wetter.

Re: 1g overheating.

Does your dash temp gauge go past straight up and down? Those would be normal temps on a 2G, maybe your sensor just reads a bit high.

Re: 1g overheating.

Are you pushing coolant? When my car was pushing, it ran a little warmer than normal and would heat up after a pull.

Re: 1g overheating.

i haven't found any coolant pushing.

Gauge is going straight up, but more importantly i am logging cruising temps of 200-206, it sucks last year i would cruise at high 170s, maybe 180s with the same setup.

I grabbed a coolant pressure tester hopefully tomorrow i can see if there are any leaks, the only thing i can think of right now is that i didn't turn on the heater when i filled the coolant this time around, but i am uncertain if i did or not.

Re: 1g overheating.

Welcome to my nightmare. I will be ditching my Checker 160 thermostat and going back to an OEM Mitsu one as I have heard they just perform better. I will also be buying a new temp sensor.

Good luck man, I feel your pain.

Re: 1g overheating.

I sometimes also get a tiny bit higher coolant temps than I want (past the E lol) At what temp does the OE thermostat open?

Re: 1g overheating.

Sounds like the thermostat might be sticking. My friend's 2g used to run a little hotter once and a while and that was the cause..

Re: 1g overheating.

Its a new stat, but yes it is a checker t-stat (beck-arnley).

Maybe i will have to go to OEM mitsu too.

B man what coolant sensor you gonna replace? I was thinking the one on the radiator because i don't know if my fans are turning on at low speed, just high speed.

I've had good luck with OEM Mitsu and Napa 180* thermostats.

Re: 1g overheating.

200 or so isnt that hot. My car used to sit at around 210 during the summer, with AC on it would climb even higher, so I didnt use that often.

How many fans do you have? I think that was my problem.

Re: 1g overheating.

I actually just replaced the switch in the radiator. If your fans aren't coming on, that could be it. I will be replacing the one around the T-Stat housing though, the one that sends the temp signal to the ECU.

And I believe the OEM thermostat opens at 180.

Have you thought about wiring your fans to be on all the time or by switch

Re: 1g overheating.

I had an issue with a cheap t-stat too. Damn thing was bad right out of the package. I only use Mitsu ones now. I thought I remembered reading that there were some lower temp Mitsu ones, but that was a while ago.

Re: 1g overheating.

I keep reading that there are 180 ones around, i called BP mitsu and they only have a 88C one, yeah dumb ass didn't know what it was in F. Any who its a 190 they have which makes sense since that is when the ecu goes into learn mode.

I keep hearing that there is a 180 from mitsu, but that dude at BPM didn't know of it.

Also, i wanted to know if anyone knows how the Fans work?
By this i mean do they have 2 speeds at which they turn on, mine right now kick on at 203 but at a really high speed, isnt there some lower speed that they turn on?

Brandon was telling me that he heard of using a diff sensor (ford, gm, etc) to have the fans turn on at a lower temp. does anyone know about this?

As far as I know, the fans only have one speed.
