Re: UBER SS

Got a few more odds and ends done recently.

Took out the 4:88 and swapped in some 4:10 gears on the posi unit.

Noticed something in the axle tube I have never seen before. Both axle tubes have a pressed in steel insert that starts right after the c-clip eliminator and goes into the center section just short of the carrier bearings. I guess they were installed to strengthen the axle tubes? You can see the machined/cut end of the insert inside of the axle tube in this picture.

I also installed some QA1 Endura Chromoly series rod ends on the 4-link to get those bushed units out of there. I just didn't trust those "street rod" type bushed rod ends to hold the power. The QA1's have a Nylon/PTFE injected ball race to keep them quiet under normal driving. Very nice part if you ever need anything like that.

And finally got those Thrush Turbo mufflers out and installed some Borla ProXS mufflers under it. These are offset straight thru design and they sound great, very deep and more defined than the old muflers. I'll try to get a video uploaded soon. At less than $100 each for a stainless steel performance muffler I highly recommend them.

Re: UBER SS

Well UBER coughed up a hairball, Lol.

I wasn't ready to jump in and redo the front suspension yet (was about to a order customer drive shaft). but I had an upper control arm bushing come out while at Cruising' the Coast. But since it had to come apart, why spend $$$ on repairing the old when the change over was going to happen anyway?

So after a month long back order wait, I finally got Global West's Drag Series upper/lower control arms (TLC-42 & TLC-42H). I also installed AFCO's A-body double adjustable coil over conversion kit (3840F/BNC shocks & GM450 springs). A note about the lower control arms is that there is no sway bar provision. Not a problem for me as UBER and high speed cornering didn't mingle well anyway, I always cornered at low speeds. So off came the sway bar as well. Every thing came together and worked well with the drop spindles I already had on it.

The upper arms added more caster to the alignment for better straight line stability and reduced bump steer.

Also, in doing this I took 28 pounds off the front end. Not a huge amount, but I'll take what I can get.

Re: UBER SS

Getting rid of that front sway bar will help immensely with weight transfer as well. This thing is a beast, now put some 88's on it!

Re: UBER SS

Yep, sway bar is gone bye-bye. That alone was 13 pounds off the front end.

BTW, what's 88's? LoL

Re: UBER SS

Got some track time in yesterday.

First time out with new engine, new front suspension and out the box Pro-Systems 980cfm carb. I was pleasantly surprised. The suspension worked great, dead solid traction on all passes.

Picked up on a few issues while tweaking it at the track, something weird is going on with my ignition system, seems like it's breaking down at times. Also figured out the carb isn't big enough, kept nosing over at 6700rpm.

3860lbs with me onboard pulled some 1.45-1.49 60ft launches. Best pass was 10.50 @ 127.69mph. All motor, no nitrous.

There is definitely more to be had power wise.

Here's a good vid one of my friends shot for me.

Wow, that thing hooks great for such a light rear end.

It's not as light out back as it would look, 1680lbs on the rear axle and 2170lbs out front with me in it. That's a 44/56 split which is really good for a tank. Its a little known secret that El Caminos have a better weight ratio than the Chevelle body because of the additional length/weight of the body after the rear axle. Station wagons do too, but that's another story, LoL. For a 4-link rear end to work well a minimum 45/55 split is recommended by chassis tuners.

That thing should run some low 10s on motor. Should be interesting when give her some laughing gas. Could go pretty fast depending on how crazy you want to go with it.

Re: UBER SS

A few more goodies going in.

Coan Max Perf 9-inch converter COA-20440-1
4800 flash stall with less than 6% slip on high end.
CSR832 Trans/Bellhousing shield.

In looking at the numbers I figured out the engine is just blowing through the converter I have now. By doing the math (32 inch tire/4.10 gear/6700rpm/6% converter slip) I should be rolling through the traps closer to 145mph instead of 127-128mph. I was hitting 6700rpm a couple of hundred feet before the traps, so basically the engine was topped out and the car was still picking up speed. Not a good scenario. Also explains why the e.t. and mph are not as strong as they should have been.

I decided to go with the CSR shield because it snug fits against the tranny housing to clear the floor board. Figured since I didn't have a tranny shield, now would be a good time to install one.

Looking at different transmission cooler options now.
