No start

So I was driving in one of the mall of america parking ramps last night looking for a spot, and just as I'm pulling up, I noticed my car started running a little rough. I pushed the clutch in, it died, and now it won't start. I've got spark and I can hear the fuel pump running as the car is turning over, and can smell fuel in the engine bay. I'm stumped as to why it would be running just fine, die, and not start. Any suggestions?

Re: No start

The ecu caps have been replaced once already, but I dunno how long ago. The last time I checked the timing, it was spot on.

Re: No start

I would throw a spare ecu in if you have one, just to rule that out.

Re: No start

The only other ecu I have is a socketed eprom with no chip. I'm still waiting on the keydriver chip I ordered.

Re: No start

I just got the chip, threw it in the ecu, so I'll go throw that in and see if it does anything

Re: No start

The car is home now, I put the eprom in, still didn't fire. Checked the timing belt, it's just fine. I'm thinking the cam sensor probably took a shit. I was looking at it, and noticed a little bit of oil at the bottom of it.

Re: No start

Do a compression check next. Before you even start troubleshooting any further. Even if your engine is cold you will still get compression. My brothers car was doing something similar. We did a compression check and it was 60 accross the board. Redid the timing and the car was good to go.

Re: No start

Ok, The Compression test came out just fine, I don't have a timing light right now, so I can't test that just yet, Put in a new Eprom chip, and the damn thing still won't start. When I connected the new ecu, my logger connected to it just fine. After turning it over a few times, I turned the ignition off, checked a few things, then turned the car back on, and the logger wouldn't connect. The next thing I'm gonna try is getting a timing light, and replacing is the cam sensor. Anyone else have any suggestions?

Re: No start

It turns over just fine. Clutch disc only has a couple thousand miles, Pressure plate is unknown, but was in good condition when my new motor was built and worked just fine before the car died.

Re: No start

You say that you have fuel and you have spark and you have compression. Those are the 3 essential things your need, but if your a/f ratio is way off (due to say a bad coolant temp sensor) then it won't start. You said you can hook up your logger, can you check what your temp sensor is reading? those little bastards can go bad and cause a no start condition.

Re: No start

By saying to check the timing, we weren't talking about ignition timing. You need to check the timing belt timing to see if it is off. There is a good chance you jumped a few teeth on the belt.

Re: No start

I'll double check the timing belt timing if it's not raining tomorrow. The logger connected the first time I tried it with the eprom, but after then it wouldn't connect. So unless it decides it doesn't wanna be a bitch anymore, I can't do too much with that.

Re: No start

Your logger won't connect? Hmmm... and you know for sure the new ECU you put in was a known good ECU?

Re: No start

I had this problem from time to time with my 2G where moisture would get into the MAFT box and it would basically not work at all. Try hooking up a standard MAS and see what happens.

Re: No start

My MAFT box is inside the car, so I dunno how it could have gotten moisture in it. The ecu I got came from a running car (or so I was told). Brandon, what you said about the coolant temp sensor seems like it might be right, When I turn it over, een if it's just for a couple seconds, the plugs are prety wet. So that leads me to believe it's either dumping in way too much fuel, or there's just not enough spark to ignite it (weak coil).
