Re: Who rebuilds trannys?

Yes, what is wrong with it exactly?

I've rebuildt 2g's both FWD and AWD tranny's for myself and for a couple of guys out of the Eau Claire area. I have the factory manuals. It's not that bad. The AWD has more shit in it of course. General tools mostly but you will need a press to get the bearings off. Unlike some people, I shim them to spec. I'd say patience and attention to detail are the biggest things not to mention being neat/clean.

Yea i agree with 99gsx, i have done my transmission, its not too complicted. Just make sure that you get your clearances correct and pay attention when you take it apart and make sure it goes back the same way. If you go ahead and do it yourself and have any question i will be more than willing to answer any question i can for you.

Re: Who rebuilds trannys?

I'm scared to give it a try because I don't really udnerstand how to measure/check the endplay/clearances and shim them to spec. I'd really like to be able to rebuild my own tranny; if I could successfully do that I'd stick with DSMs. As of right now, I'm getting to the point I'm so frustrated I don't want to deal with anything.

My FR cv shaft has a little play when installed correctly, and the tranny leaks fluid there. I fear that is caused by a worn front diff or something. And if it's apart I might as well do new bearings and syncros, a mitsu double syncro kit, and a spool. haha.

Re: Who rebuilds trannys?

When it's warm out, I'm gonna give this a try! I understand the endplay and shimming now, its basically washers and you just check it with a feeler gauge duh. I like taking stuff apart and putting it all back together, so this will be a fun challenge.

Re: Who rebuilds trannys?

as for clearances you just put in some solder where the shims go, tourque all the bolts down let it sit overnight and then measure the solder and subtract what you want for clearances and then add that much shim behind the bearing races. I have not had to deal with any diffs so i cant help you there but the shimmings is pretty damn easy.

Re: Who rebuilds trannys?

Well you really do need acess to a hydraulic press too, you wont get the bearing races off the input shaft or secondary shafts without them. Thats about all the special tools you need, as far as a class i dont know about that.....
