Transmission rebuild

Hey guys, in the middle of rebuilding my transmission (2g awd) because my input shaft bearing went out. How are you guys shimming the trans to get the correct preloads for the bearings? I know of the solder trick, but since they don't sell the shims anymore i'm curious as to what people are using. Jacks told me about "shim in a can" which looks to be just machined sheets of steel that i would need to cut circles out of for the shims, has anyone used this or have any shims?!?
