replacing bearings

i am thinking of just replacing bearings ... without taking the engine out... which bearings would you recomend, i know its half assed way of doing it, but i don't want to spend much money on the new engine... if i go with a new engine i'll go all out with the engine, but i don't want to spend the 10k now...

who has done it, and which bearings would you suggest for the 7 bolt.. still has 170 compression.

If you are willing to do the bearings on your own you could easily pull the motor and do a rebuild on your own for far less than 10k. Just something to think about.

I would get something pretty hard. First thing I would do it see if it ate through the bearings or scored the crank at all. If not, I would go with something hard, like the ACL race bearings. I would also run some really good oil.

Why are you replacing the bearings, have you inspected them and found wear?

How are you gonna replace the crank bearings with the motor still in the car? if you're gonna even drop the tranny, you might as well pull the motor, it really isn't much work.

A local board member only paid about $2500 for a very nice built engine from one of the local shops, and I think that price might have even included installation. Hopefully he'll chime in.

I'm guessing you're talking about me. I had mine built by MAP for what I'd say was a great price, and then payed a little bit more on top of that to have them install it. I don't remember the exact prices, but I brought them a used short block, which they built and had ready to drop in within maybe 2 weeks. I then dropped my running car off there, left for Spain. They took the old motor out, used the same head and all the other components that were on the car, put it all together. I came back home, and stopped at there shop where they handed me the keys and I drove it home. About as hassle free as it gets I'd say.

Steve also does decent rebuilds if you're looking for someone to build it, but I'm not sure if he's willing to install them.

Enes,

As far as bearings go I would go with Jet and recommend the ACL H-Rated race bearings. The only downside is on the 97+ motors the thrust bearing is the same material as their standard Aluglide series so there is no real advantage to going with the race bearings in regards to preventing crankwalk once again. Now, if it is a 95-96 motor that's a different story as the thrust is built in to the center main bearing (but I recall you having a nicer looking late model 2g).

In that regard, you could probably get a stock 6 bolt long block for a good price, but you are still looking at replacing a lot of components.

If i am going to build an engine i'll do it the right way, all of it, full long block with quite a bit of work on both, lower and top end. hence they $$$...

Right because of the high compression still on the engine i'll just replace the bearings. Unfortunately it is a 97+ 7bolt...

what do those bearings go for anyways?

$99.99 for the mains, rods, and thrust washer in the ACL Race series.
