Project: New Headliner

My headliner has been in shambles since I've owned this car. Right where it meets the rear hatch, it was falling down to the point of blocking my view from the rear view mirror. For the last few years, my answer to that was stick somewhere around 30 flush thumb tacks all over to keep it up and out of my way.

Well I'm sick of that. Today I took the interior apart a little and got the headliner off. Too bad I didn't take any before pictures. I think something was living up there at one time because tons of bird seed was up there.

So, got the headliner off. Threw it out in the yard and started tearing off the old fabric. Once I got that off, there was still some kind of foamy/glue crap all over. I used my angle grinder and a sanding pad and lightly went over everything to get as much off as I could without destroying the mold.

Went to JoAnne's Fabric and got a large piece of Felt that is appx 6' x 6'. More then enough for the headliner. I'm hoping to use the leftovers to do the sun visors, and possibly the door inserts.

Brought it home and layed it on the headliner mold and I think I will have plenty left over! Cut out around the headliner, leaving a lot of extra on the ends because I can always cut more off, but can never put more back on.

I'm going to keep a running tab on how much this project is costing in the end, so those of you who also have horseshit headliners can see just how cheap/easy this is, and maybe motivate others to do it as well!!

(1) 6' x 6' sheet of felt = $9.29
(1) 11 oz. can of Loctite High Performance Spray Adhesive = $6.92

TOTAL = $16.21

Re: Project: New Headliner

3M's Super 77 is great stuff to use to put the actual fabric on the head liner.

Good luck with the project, seems like you already know what you're doing though!

Sweet deal! Did you go with grey or is it black? What are you using to glue it on?

Re: Project: New Headliner

The color is kind of a grey black combo, kind of a smokey looking mixture of black and grey. Should go real well with the grey trim pieces I have now.

I was looking for Suede, but they didn't have any grey suede, and I didn't want black.

So this stuff looked pretty decent, and was cheap as hell.

Tomorrow I plan on hitting up Walmart or Lowe's or something and picking up some 3M spray on adhesive, and that is how I plan on gluing it to the mold. Then just quick do the visors and I should be set

Picked up a can of adhesive from Lowe's. Added it to my list in the first post.

Re: Project: New Headliner

Got the material on and is drying as is for the moment. In a half hour or so i'll go back and start trimming it up. I'm happy with it so far though

Re: Project: New Headliner

Visors are drying. I didn't bother putting the mirrors back in them.

Everything is just drying right now. Next thing I have to do is cut out the holes in the headliner where needed (ie: sunroof).

Re: Project: New Headliner

99% done. As you can see the clips are still on the sun visors. I'm going to leave those on overnight I think. So that's the 1% left, just let them dry some more.

What a difference!

If anyone else wants to do this, I think half of this can of adhesive is still left that you could just have.

Re: Project: New Headliner

Also I'll mention I have quite a bit of the fabric left over. Probably enough to do maybe 6 more visors. So 6' x 6' is a good bit more then you need, but it's nice to have all that extra material so you aren't cutting it extremely close. You could get away with a 6' x 4' I'd bet.
