wow 1200rwhp is very impressive for a stock transmission, sounds like you need something a little bigger then just a 61mm

Re: Project Lex

Twin 61's, what do you think this is, a Lambo or something?

Got the rear subframe back from Powder Keg where it was coated semi-gloss black. Goal was to keep it clean/oem looking, and look good as new. Turned out perfect, thanks Tim!

Also dropped off my rear diff cover for them to powder coat as well.

Re: Project Lex

Very small update.

Got some new hardware in the mail today from Curt @ Elmhurst Toyota to replace some of the old rusty/crappy hardware. Any other hardware I need I'll either just clean up the old ones or go get new stuff from Ace Hardware.

Re: Project Lex

Another mini-update.

Cam choices for the GE (non-vvti) head are extremely limited due to the exhaust cam requiring a gear to spin the Distributor and cam/crank sensors. The only simple option is to order a set of upgraded cams from a company called TTC, who basically has webcam hardweld stockers and grind to them to TTC's specs, which they then sell the sets for around $900/pair. That's a tough pill to swallow for a DSM guy used to buying a set of used HKS's for $300, haha.

So I've been on the hunt for quite some time to try and find a more affordable solution. Ended up coming across a company called Schneider who does camshaft regrinding. So I purchased a set of spare stock cams for $100 shipped. Will be shipping them to Schneider who will regrind them to any spec I want for $250/pair. That's a helluva lot better than $900, and I can get them ground to any spec I want

And since I know someone is going to ask, I did contact Delta Cams as well, and they told me they do not do 2jz cams.

So anyway, I really want to keep this car a street car. I love the sound of lope at idle just as much as the next guy, but I care more about idle quality, and low end torque. So I want to keep overlap somewhat low if possible, but also don't want to totally hinder performance. So Looking at their high lift 264 grind:
http://schneidercams.com/264F-HL_2JZ.aspx

They said they can customize the grind as well, so I may consider asking them to bump the duration out the 268 to soften the ramp up, and maybe get a little more power without going all the way to a 272.

Either way, glad I found a cam option that isn't going to cost me a G.

Re: Project Lex

Nicely do, are they going to have you shim anything to account for the camshaft grind?

Re: Project Lex

These heads don't have HLA's like DSM's, so shimming is part of a cam install usually anyway. Some people have said they got away without shimming with other cams, but I wonder if those people really check. Most people I've heard from have to shim.

So yes I'll have to shim the buckets, but it's nothing I wouldn't have likely had to do anyway. I was considering a shimless bucket setup, but starting to think the return on investment for that isn't really worth it for me as I'm not really looking to rev anywhere past 8k.

Bushings are in the subframe. Also some homemade rear diff ear bushings made from 80A poly, thanks again K-dog.

Re: Project Lex

Started putting the rear sub-assembly back together. Really liking the fact that I bought new hardware to replace some of the rusty bolts. However they screwed up and sent me the wrong two cam-bolts for the lower control arm. So I have the old rusty ones in there for now until they send me the correct ones.

Gave things a light coat of black paint here and there to touch things up and keep it all clean.

Also got my rear diff back from PowderKeg, done in "soft silver". Looks great!

Slowly but surely will continue just putting it all back together. And I love how everything is just so much cleaner now!

Some pics of it coming back together.

New hardware

Diff cover "soft silver". Again just going for a clean and like new look.

Re: Project Lex

Thanks all

More small updates. Things are going slowly but surely. I basically spent way too long trying to get the stock bushings out of the rear diff, but I eventually got them out. Poly bushings are mostly in. I put the new diff cover on. I also cleaned up some hardware that was looking crappy. Shot it with a light coat of rust inhibitor primer than a light coat of silver, so hopefully they'll stay rust free now. Here's a couple pics.

Comparison of before wire wheel and after wire wheel:

After a quick shot of silver paint to prevent future rust

Rear diff all buttoned up, poly bushings in:
