Dog Box Racing
$1200 for a race rebuild seems awful cheap. Anyone know anything about these guys, or have any experience.

Re: Dog Box Racing
Hmmmmmm... Seems too cheap if you ask me. I'd look into it more. What a great price on race trannys though

Re: Dog Box Racing
a bunch of guys on gvr4.org got rebuilds from them and loved em. i believe they had a low 10/high 9 sec car at the shootout last year as well.

Re: Dog Box Racing
If you hit the right buttons, then their site isn't broken!
Thanks for the feedback flopdor. I am thinking of getting the tranny redone over the winter, and their price really caught my eye. I'm just having a hard time finding reviews for them.

Re: Dog Box Racing
Not really a great deal because you have to add these options to keep it together.
UPGRADES
4 spider diff upgrade $400 (add $300 to the race build)
needle thrust bearing upgrade for center diff cap... excellent preventative measure to save your stock or 4 spider diff $100

Re: Dog Box Racing
So I'm looking at the trannies that Shep has on his site. And his stage 4 seems to not come with a 4 spider diff, it says it comes with a welded diff, which Dog Box Racings does as well. I'm not too much of a tranny guru, so I don't know much about this, but to me if Shep's racing tranny comes with a welded diff, and so does this other companies, that seems about right to me.
What's the advantages/disadvantages to the 4-spider and Welded diff?

Re: Dog Box Racing
I don't see the attraction, they're almost the same price as Shep, who is the undisputed kings of DSM trannies. The four spider option converts the normal two spider center diff into four, spreading the force among more gears, which cuts back on the force each has to endure in a high torque application while still allowing the viscous coupler to do it's job. Which is allowing the front and rear wheels to turn at different speeds so you can go around corners without the tires skipping, not pleasant in street-driven cars. Welding the VC or the center diff is better for drag cars but doesn't allow the front and rear wheels to turn at different speeds which is very noticeable in parking lots and short corners. Welding the diff is much better of the two for less wear and tear on the tranny and xfer case if you're going that route.

Re: Dog Box Racing
I see, so I'd probably NOT want a welded diff then. But again, I don't have a huge in depth knowledge of tranny, so I don't know what to compare it to. But if you compare their Race one, to Sheps Stage 4 Race one, well there is about an 1100 dollar difference. That's not almost the same price to me I guess.
So apparently some GVR4's have had luck with them. And apparently I'd have to add a couple options to this tranny as well. But those same options don't appear to come with Shep's stg4 too, so I'd also have to add them to his tranny as well. Anyone else?

Re: Dog Box Racing
No feedback on them, but do the 4 spider instead of the welded for sure.

Re: Dog Box Racing
I would compare the dogbox race trans with a 4 spider center diff to the Shep stage 3 trans. The Shep stage 3 comes with the 4 spider and the stage 4 comes with the welded center. A welded center is stronger but is more suited for race use rather than street driving. The stage 4 is overkill for most people on this site for sure.
Shep stage 3= $1745
Dog box race w/ 4 spider=$1700
For the difference in price I would go with what has been proven to be great over and over again.
I agree with everyone else, get the 4 spider. A welded center diff is a bitch in the parking lots and tight corners.

Re: Dog Box Racing
+1 on skipping the welded diff. I am with Steve on this one, go with Shep. Hes got good reviews and is very well respected. I think about this way, whats cheaper, buying a shep right off the bat, or buying a dog box one, having it shit out on you, then having to buy a shep?
