Since you can get aftermarket struts for DSMs I suggest going that route for now. Get some adjustable Konis with nice springs, maybe swaybars too, and you'll be good until you want to get serious.

That is kind of what I was thinking as well. Not sure how much time I will have to put towards the car so I am planning to keep it somewhat simple to start.
