I've always liked this route.
Gosh charged me around $780 to do a complete shortblock last fall. This included all cleaning, machining, balancing and complete assembly to my specs and tolerances.
With the seemingly abundance of 'junk' engines out there, and the availability of inexpensive after-market pistons and rods, I cannot see forking out a grand for a running 6-bolt (or whatever they are selling for now), when you can have a solid product without the guesswork.
