I'd say that's true for the most part. You can still get enjoyment out of a less expensive bike, but if you have to make constant adjustments just so that you can shift gears and brake properly, then you will probably not enjoy it as much, and be less likely to ride it. When you spend the money for a bike with nicer components, it will shift easier and smoother, and generally be more reliable. I guess it boils down to how much you ride it, and also how you ride it. If you pull it out of the garage twice a year for a leisurely stroll around the neihborhood, then you probably wont see any big advantage for spending big bucks on a bike. But if you're going to use it alot, or if you'll be riding a little harder, then it would be worth it. I'm not an expert or anything, but this is what I have found.

p.s. I made a mistake in my first post. According to the article, the bike weighs 19.7 lbs, not 17. But that's still pretty damn light.
