On the 3 cars I have used a spacer plate I have not run into a problem with a return line. Most of them have a flex section and if it is a PTE oil line kit, you have a rubber hose. His got a leak on the back of the line kind of where the line bolts to the block. Small hole right on the seam. I was so pissed off replacing it.
